Tell me about the Yak
« on: May 25, 2000, 08:43:00 PM »
OK Guys (Verm especially),

With the Yak-9 due out shortly, what are the expected flight characteristics of this plane?  I'm about ready to try a new plane out and I'd like to know what Im in for with the Yak.

I know Verm has been eagerly awaiting this plane so maybe he or some of you others can fill me in as to how this plane is likely to behave?  Hows its speed, accelleration, climb, and armament compared to some of the other planes in AH now?

I fly primarily the Nik and 51 in the arena so which of these is the Yak more like?  I tried some Yak variant out in AW3 a few years ago and have to say I was never impressed with it, however, having flown the Niki in both places AH and AW can have DRAMATICALLY different flight models for the same plane.

Ok guys....let loose!  Barrage me with flight info!

-Ding

well dingy this plane is a hot rod

its the yak-9u with the big engine...
the one the russians called the M-107a, a big block V12 pushing a 3 blade prop with 1650 horsepower.

the yak-9u weighed in empty at 5100lb but loaded down checked in at 6988lb.

although the yak9 has a small clip of ammo its performance must be respected even up to high altitudes of 20k.

down at sea level the yak9u is burning a hole in the sky at 367mph however like all russian aircraft its supercharging is nonexistant or very weak, although the yak9u still has the power to do 418mph at 18,700ft.
low altitude 109g10s look out when trying to climb to get away... the yak9u initial climb is 4528fpm.

the yak is still a short range fighter though with max range of 746miles.

armament is very similar to the 109s in arangement and clip duration although the russian 20mm if I remember right is better than the mg151.

basically you will have your hands full when you meet a yak9u in the arena.
Fester was my in game name until September 2013

I think the Yak 9U is even a little better than that Citabria.  Top speed I have listed for the 9U is 435 Mph.  (Stang D is 437.)  Service ceiling is 35,000 ft.

The 9U was armed in a fashion almost identical to the 109.  It has a 20mm (or 23mm) firing through the spinner.  In addition 2 12.7mm MG are mounted.

Dingy,

The Klimov engine that powers the Yakovlev rotates the propeller counter-clockwise (pilot perspective), like the Typhoon.  Thus, your best turn will be to the right, not left, and snap rolls will be initiated with a right bank and hard right rudder.

The view will be the best among existing AH fighters (Yak-3 actually has a better front view, but that isn't here yet).

I believe what will be most amazing about the Yak-9U will be its combat turn.  A combat turn is what most of us do after a merge, a sort of climbing turn that is a half loop, but to one side.  It's the fastest way to reverse direction and get alt while you're at it.  I think with the Yak-9U you'll be able to get an impressive amount of alt doing a combat turn, and by making it a little tighter you'll be able to reverse very quickly.

Of course, you will have a fighter that will accelerate very quickly, possibly even more than the G-10 yet be much more maneuverable.  Its climb rate will be first rate too, and the Yak-9U's top speed may mean that now no US iron in AH can run away.

On the other hand, the Yakovlev, like most other VVS fighters, will not perform well as it reaches the medium-high altitudes, 17k-20k.  Also, it is somewhat fragile in combat, taking about as much damage as a spitfire (structurally, it is quite tough, handling high speed maneuvers very well).  The landing gears should be very tough, allowing for rough landings w/o mishap.

Finally, I should say that this plane is overall actually better than the Yak-3s, and because it is the larger Yak-9 airframe, the Yak-9U should handle low speed maneuvers noticably better than the diminutive fighter, the Yak-3.

I don't think I can add anything more about the way the Yak will fly.

Standard armament was a single ShVak 20mm (same gun as on the La5) cannon firing thru the hub, plus x2 12.7mm USB Heavy MG's mounted above the engine, synchronised to fire thru the prop.

Now it is a possibility, but not a certainty, that there may be some "alternate" loadout options.  There was a subvariant of the -9U, called the -9UT, the T being the first letter of a russian word meaning "heavily armed". Out of the 3,920 odd Yak-9U's, 282 were of the -UT subvariant. So its unknown how Pyro will go on this.

But here are the -UT options

x3 B-20 20mm Cannons (B-20 is ballistically identical to the ShVAk cannon)
x2 B-20 20mm Cannons + x1 NS-23 23mm Cannon
x2 B-20 20mm Cannons + x1 NS-37 37mm Cannon
x2 B-20 20mm Cannons + x1 NS-45 45mm Cannon

The B-20 20mm cannon was a basically a scaled up USB 12.7mm MG.

I am eagerly looking forward to flying this plane.

Also- A side note-
The Yak will be the first fighter here with
ShKAS 12.7 mm machine guns. While these are just two .50 cal weapons they are extremely impressive in comparison to american .50 cal. The guns weigh less and have a slightly lower ROF. more importantly take a look at the case if you can find a screen shot. ShKAS is almost 2x the size of a .50 cal. It's a longer heavier bullet and has a MASSIVE amount of case behind it. The case resembles a 20mm case more than a .50. These things will probably make more than a few people blink when they start hitting.

If your in range, so is the enemy.

How would the Tempest compare to the Yak?

Yak-9U would have better sustained turn rate and low speed handling.  Otherwise the Tempest Mk. V is superior.
