I have atleast 1 photo of the Mustang III flown by the RAAF in what looks to be a desert camo scheme.  It's hard to tell because it is a black and white photo. I've also got a profile of a Mustang Ia in a desert camo scheme.

Jeff Ethyll has a book called Fighter Command, in it is a bunch
of 31st FG Spitfires and a few shots of their P-51Bs, you might
look into that scheme, it's close to desert.

I'd scan it for you, but I'll need a day or two to dig it out.

No desert 51Bs/Ds that I'm aware of.  The 31st birds were OD/Gray.  The RAF birds were the usual Dark Ocean Gray/Dark Green Camo.

I suppose you might find a test bird out there that they tried it on, but I don't believe there was any squadron application of desert tans and browns on 51s as they were into Italy by that time.
