log wait preloading textures, then host connection lost
« on: January 25, 2005, 06:25:27 AM »
About half the time now I'm getting "host connection lost" after initial log on with texture preloading. Then the game CTD's. Restarts fine, never a problem after first load.

I have to log in about 8 times before it finnally takes. Had this problem a while back. I reformated and reinstalled and it was fine for about a week. Now it is back to where I dont even want to try logging in cause it wastes so much time. I run ad-aware and norton... not sure what the problem is. None of the other games I play ever do this. You said pre=loaded textures I do have mine pre-loaded. I might try to uncheck this and see if it helps.

alright just uncheck my preload textures box. logged in quick and normal. Then went to video settings checked it hit apply guess what....lost udp discod....Not sure what the problem is here as I said after several log in attempts it works fine but  I don't want to sit here trying to log in 5 or 6 times to make it work. Sucks though not preloading gives me a 10 fps or so frame drop..

fps drop not as bad as I first thought.

AMD64 2.16 GHZ
512 Ram
Nvidia 6800
Cable-Comcast

just updated to SP2 yesterday problem occurs before and after I updated

Try setting the maximum texture size to 512.  If you are running it set at 1024, you probably do not have enough physical ram to run it well.
As new skins are released, the memory requirements go up.

You can also try unchecking the skins option in the game as this will stop the preloading of them.

yep I do run 1024 .Unchecking the pre-load fixed my problem though so I might leave it. The fps drop is not really all that bad. I like the skins so I might go for the GIG O ram...

Or you can turn down the maximum texture size to 512, and still preload all the textures into system ram.

OK, but my texture size is 256 and I have a Gig of RAM. I have been experiencing the problem with THESE settings. Any thoughts?

What kind of connection do you have to the Internet Sim?

Are you running an anti-virus program when playing?  Anti-virus programs can cause long delays on loading due to the program checking every file that is opened.  Once loaded into your computers memory (i.e. cached) it is much faster about this.

Are you behind a router?  Personal routers need to be power cycled about once a week.

Are you using a wireless router?  These will have inherent problems with UDP due to bit errors in the stream.  There is nothing much which can be done about this.  An error in UDP means the packet is lost forever.

The fact you are connecting after the first drop indicates it has something to do with all the files being loaded into the system memory being delayed, and once loaded, the delay is minimized so the second attempt works.

Do have antivirus software running, could be the problem

Have a wired router, cable connection -- dont reset every week tho

Will try these -- however, have had these in place long before started having probelm aboit 2 weeks ago.

Thanks

What does Power Cycled mean exactly?  I just started using a router and don't really know.  Is it just unplugging the power cord then replugging it in?

I have been having a similar problem - first orange ball of flame explosion I see - the game locks up and I boot, I have now been entering the game, up a Flack panzer, jump to gun - zoom on a hanger - fire a shot - see explosion-lock up, relog and everything is fine, figure it is a graphics loading problem , i only have a 64mg Nvidea card , so it works for me, and so far that seems to get me back into the game faster
