It is difficult to see, but the victory markers are six swastikas for air to air victories on the top row, on the bottom row, the first two on the left are locomotives, and the next two are swastikas. I still cannot find the picture I have of the real plane.

Thanks Dan and Virgil!

Can you tell what the markings are to the right and above the word "JACK'S"?    They look like black balloons to me.   (Maybe its time for a 1600x1200 monitor?)

Not sure I can get the yellow color on the front of the radiator intakes.    Still trying to find where that comes from in the texture map....

Oboe, those are the standard mission markers. There are symbols for different missions. Umbrellas are top cover missions, tophats and canes are escort missions, and the symbol for ground attack/interdiction/close air support escapes me, at the moment. I'm sure Dan can come in here and cover for my stupid pitiful memory.

By the way, I found a pic of Ilfrey with the original plane, but I do not have it hosted on a site. It really doesn't show much detail, it's more of a keepsake type thing than anything else. I have one of Larry Blumer and Scrap Iron IV as well. Email me if you want them.

Somewhere I got the impression the the "HAPPY JACK'S..." text was highlighted or shadowed with red, but I don't notice that in these scan..

I think you got that from the pictures of the Duxford P-38, originally painted as "Happy Jack's Go Buggy", and later repainted as "California Cutie". I have the original Duxford paintjob on my desktop, and it indeed shows red (and maybe yellow as well) shadowing around the letters.

However, the picture of Jack next to the original plane after a mission does appear to show the letters with no background or shadow.
