Radar and Detection Modeling
« on: September 23, 2000, 12:32:00 PM »
I'm wondering about radar detection ranges, radar masking, and visual sighting and the interaction of these in terms of the map.

First, what is max range for radar from a friendly base to show enemies on the map?

Second, it seems like some kind of masking is modeled, so that flying behind hills will screen a con.

Third, it seems that radar detection is greater at higher alt than lower... true?

I don't suppose any kind of doppler notch is modeled?

Finally, it seems that the sim is designed such that visual ID is not transferred to the map, but we have to rely on our friends to inform us of contact. So, when radar is down NOTHING appears on the map. Right?

If so, that would be an interesting parameter to change.... so when a friendly IDs a conn near his base, even with radar down, as long as it was within 6k of the friendly it would still appear on the map.

Killing the fields radar dish will disable enemy radar dots in the 12.5 mile radius (half a square).

Flying below 500 feet over the ground (AGL) inside this radius will mask your location on enemy's radar. Friendly radar spotting will be lost too however (also beyond the 12.5 radius)

Radar detection inside the 12.5 mile zone is 100% foolproof as long as enemy stays above 500 feet off ground. (see above)

Doppler notch? got me there

Icons will show up at 6.0K for both friendly and enemy. Air to ground ID is 1.5K for enemies (still 6.0K for friendly) and Ground to Ground ID is NON if contact is an enemy.
Those ranges are not affected by your contry's HQ being hit. your HQ have 4 levels (Enemy Contact, Enemy Radar, Frindly Contact, Friendly Radar) For every 25% your HQ is down you loose first enemy radar (the small red dots at 12.5 mile frome bases). at 50% you loose the green dots (all over map), 75% takes away enemy contact ( the squares in each sector showing how many enemies are in there, even below 500 ft), and when all down you also loose friendly contact (the green squares).

Hope that clears things up.

Give  me a Duel processor-P966 that will keep FR  high while flying in clouds and HTC will give  us more clouds!
