dancing fleets?

Why is it that every time a fleet gets turned the ships do a little slow dance before settling in?  Whats wrong with a simple coordinated turn instead of a drunken frenzy?

I've noticed it too, the ships follow some sort of procedure, the outer destroyers start to accelerate while the cruiser makes a slow turn while the the carrier makes a tighter turn.

This makes the cruiser sailing besides the carrier and having to accelerate.

Very odd indead!
