old computers...
« on: January 31, 2005, 09:39:19 PM »
just hopped on the board while over at step fathers house. used to live there with him and mother.

this old PC a PII 400 mhz wiht a 28.8 dialup

YIKES LOL

i helped them pick this out like many years ago... was TOP of the line at the time. spent like $3000 on it

i have since gave them more memory, and upgraded to XP home. it runs ok, no real problems, keeping the viruses out is a tough one, since my stepdad is not real tech savy. have to keep norton running full time, and updating, and doing it's own scans in the background. makes this thing even slower than it needs to be.

another thing, this old 8GB WD hard drive in here, and the whole PC for that matter has been ON for liek 3 years staright now LMFAO. i tell him to shut down for a night at least once a week, but he never does it LOL. talk about a tank of a PC, i feel bad telling him for $500 he can get a brand new Dell with a flat panel moniter that would be like 100 times faster than this thing.

all he does is email and freecell, so he doesn't care really about "speed" or power or even other programs. heck he doesn't know how to write a letter in word.

funny, there are highschoolers who can't write a letter without word, and here my stepdad is just fine, getting along with life, president (mayor) of the city we live in.

sometimes i wish we all could go back to a more "simple" and low tech way of life.

that said, i am on this 4+ year old keyboard, and it feels more comfortable and natural than my 2 month old one. why can't they make em like they used too?

oh well random thought for the night done.
I don't know what to put here yet.

I just bought an old VAIO 505 notebook; 300 mhz, 2g hd, 96 mhz ram, 10.4" screen... and it's also about the same size and weight as an issue of People magazine. It's PERFECT for email and internet and storing pictures while on vacation.

As long as you're not gaming or doing anything multimedia, most computer speed is superfluous.

Im at work now...I can cruise the web but cant do email or any of the instant messengers

I bought a couple IBM Thinkpad 600Es on eBay....company was thru leasing em and I got em for a great price.  Since then, I installed a DVD drive, maxed the ram and installed XP Pro.  XP Pro, especially when you ditch stuff like Indexing service, system restore and other crap, runs very swiftly on this little 300mhz

Just fine for instanting messaging and email.  Sucks I only get 28.8 on the dialup (behind the centrex switch).

By "old" I thought you'd mean a Commodore 64 or Apple II or something.  A 400mhz machine is new enough to still be more than adequate for most people's computer needs (email/internet browsing/cd burning/etc).

Yeah, I guess I'm old, because "old computer" means a Honeywell system, punch cards and token ring networking.

I know what you mean. I find myself moraly at odds with technology all the time. Don't get me wrong, I'm not afraid of it and am somewhat of a gadget freak, it just doesn't seem natural. I grew up premoon and do think life was a lot of fun before pc's and India was click away. That said, I have a working atari 1024ST and monitor. I want to check ebay to see what they're selling for but I always forget.

I remember when the best show on TV on a Tuesday night was the Fugitive. But I also know the eutopia of the past is a mind thing and not real. If only it was...

hey i know about real old computers...

i still have an apple IIc with 128k memory, and a 16 color monitor.

i even have a mouse for it for mouse paint.

i was just observing my stepdad's PC and thinking some day soon, that HD is going to fail or something.

Any idea what they sell for on Ebay? I was thinking about just throwing it out, but if I could get a few bucks...

Edit: Never mind, just checked - about $20. Into the trash it goes.
