Fx 5950 ???
« on: January 31, 2005, 11:37:30 AM »
I lost my cpu last december and upgraded to a athlon 64 3200+ on a dfi lanparty socket 754 board. I'm running 1 gig of PC3200 with an old Ti-4200 card. Actually AH runs pretty well ~58 fps at default. I'm going to piece another system togeather and I'm thinking bout swapping out the Ti-4200. Money isnt really an issue but I dont play any boxed games. It seems like the 5950 offers an awful lot of bang for the buck....

So.....

Does it make sense to spend the extra 100 or 200 for "the best" given my limited usage...also is there a better card out there similiarly priced??

Unless that 5950 is an ultra you're gonna be dissapointed, but for the price of the ultra you can get a 6800 and for just a little more a 6800gt that will almost double the performance of the 5950 ultra.

I had a 5950 but fried it OC'ing it. I wanted to get another because I was happy with it, but the price of them is higher than the new 6x00 cards. I got a plain 6800 for less than a 5950 and easily double the performance, but even a 6600GT would be faster than the 5900 series and much cheaper.

I goofed was thinking the 9550....

I was over at frys and saw the 9600XT 256mb for $199. The other option is a 9800 pro for $249. The 9800 pro (128 mb) is 256 data pipe and the 9600XT is a 128 pipe. Which is a better choice???

Thanks for the input on the 9950....came to same conclusion on price vs the other cards.

i have a 9800 pro with a 64 3400+ , its fine for AH , 249 is steep for a 9800 pro , i paid that 8 months ago , if i where you id look online and get a plain 6800 ive seen the as low as 280 , it will be quite a jump from a 9800 pro , if you want to be at the 200 range then id say that a 6600GT is a good choice , it will beat a 9800 pro hands down without Anti aliasing, but due to its 128 bit bus it has some trouble with AA .     <> 38
