Does anyone have any experience with using their GSM phone in other countries, specifically St. Kitts and Guatemala?

My provider says my quad-band phone will work with no trouble but I'd just like to hear if anyone can verify that.

My three band phone worked fine in the US. The roaming fees were just horrendous.

Yeah, definitely check with your provider to find out what the roaming rates are. That is, if you haven't already.

They say it's $1.99 a minute. Outrageous but well worth it if I get a call.

The problem is will I get the call in another country. Cingular says yes but I'm hoping for a second opinion as I don't really trust a salesman to tell me if it wouldn't work.

My dad has verizon. So do I. He went to Mexico. I could call him, he couldn't call me.

It should route the call there...when your phone connects to a tower with a roaming partner with that country, it will register in thier local system, which will update Cingular on the location of your phone. Just make sure that you switch to the appropriate band, if needed. A lot of phones will switch automatically, but some require you to switch it manually.

If you don't plan on using the phone at any period of time, turn it off. If a call is routed to the phone, then forwarded to VM by the phone, you'll probably end up being charged roaming for the time the forwarded call is going.

My Motorola V600 phone worked all over the Caribbean region. The charges are outrageous for those as well. I am on Cingular as well. I am thinking about trading in the phone to get the new Razr that Motorola has out now. Its supposed to work better with the Bluetooth headset than my V600 does.

I think Japan and Korea are the only two countries that do not use the same protocol. Other countries should be fine.
