close distance overshoot

cc that Andy...what I think I was trying to communicate was a "thought process"...I'm closing on a con:

1) I'm in his rear hemisphere
2) My rate of closure precludes his extending

So, if he flys straight he'll die...he can

1) go up
2) go down
3) go left
4) go right
5) combine variation of 1-4

If I can I'll try and get to low 6...slightly offset...to low 5 usually since most cons break left.

If I can I'll try and anticipate break and drive to corner...to me the rule here is no more than 1 good pull on stick 45 deg or so...take shot if it's there...and do as you say...unload and get out of dodge.

"The beauty of the second amendment is that it will not be needed until they try to take it."-Pres. Thomas Jefferson

Andy Bush and Humble -- Great discussion and right on!  Andy, think you summed it up when you said "don't get in phonebooth in an energy fighter with and angles fighter..." Going back to initial question and Eskimo's response, "pull lead and take the shot," then get out of Dodge, regain energy and look for a re-entry.  Slowing below sustained in an energy fighter to engage an angles fighter that's probably at optimum corner velocity is dangerous business!  A snapshot is probably the best you'll do if he sees you and does good defensive break.  Better than getting anchored there with him, though.

Methinks you may have done this before!

If so, please help out with the 'real world' perspective in these discussions.

Well yeah, that's why I added that last part  . I'll follow a bandits turn to some extent, but pulling minimum G's and instead using the vertical to gain angles. As soon as I feel that I'm getting too slow, or if I see him beginning a scissors type maneuver, I'll pull up and wait for him to finish playing, then reengage.

Andy - changed my username (lackey) to tac callsign.  Would enjoy helping out in responses, but I couldn't touch the quality feedback you're giving these guys.  Good work!  You ever fly with St Louis Guard?

Thanks! But please jump into these threads whenever you can. The more and varied perspectives, the better.

I have never flown with the Lambert Guard...I fly those red and white planes down the ramp from them! My AF time was all active duty.

Thanks to you too!! Everyone is invited to stop by my weapons and tactics Q&A forum as well as the Air Combat Corner. Find it at:

You mean those rudder anomalies that clutter up our once pristine airpatch??!!

Maybe...just don't tell anyone about it!

Got a few F-104 and A-10 buds over your way.

Buy you a sasparilla sometime!
