OK, short and sweet. The Cylons, a race of robots, a la Terminators,  took over the home planet of Capria and declared war against the Human race. The remnants of mankind were forced to evacuate in spaceships and run for their life while the Cylons gave chase. The only defense the fleet has is a single Battlestar, The Galactica. In the original series they were looking for the mythical planet of Earth, where legend had it other humans existed.

So wait, humans had spaceships but only lived on one planet? I inferred they had colonies too, from watching the pilot for the new series. How exactly did  the cylons take over all those planets so fast?

I used to watch the old series for a little while. Was pretty good, but it didn't seem too original. The spacecraft looked pretty cool but I can't recall any outstanding episodes. I do believe they are looking for Earth in the new series as well.
Also, in the old series the cylons were led by an old guy. What's his equivalent in the new series? Is it that chick that can go into the scientist guy's brain?

It's my understanding that in the new BSG, humans created AI (kinda like Terminator and Matrix).  After awhile, the cylons revolted and there was a long war.  In the end, either the humans won or the cylons just decided to retreat into space.  However, every year the humans would send an envoy to meet at some space station to see if the cylons would show up and create a lasting peace.  Instead, the cylons showed up and killed the envoy, signaling the attack on the human colonies.

Now, I'm still not sure if there is one planet with 12 major cities on it, or if there were 12 planets, one for each colony.  I beleive that there are 12 planets though.

The cylons had been infiltrating both the fleet and Federation life for years with their look-alikes.  One had gone so far as to give advanced technology to Baltar to create advanced tactical controls for all of the Fleet.  However, they had set up the programs to fail when the attack came.  Therefore, all the new stuff just shut off and left the fleet floating in space when the attack came.  Except for the Galactica, the last of the old style battlestars with the old pre-Baltar controls.  She was to be turned into a museum, so she also had a complement of old-style Vipers.

That's why she was able to fight her way to the anchorage and RV with what civilian ships had jump capabilities and had escaped.  Since then they have been trying to stay ahead of the cylons while the "human" cylons who infiltrated the fleet have been sabtaguing (sp) it when they can.  And there is somewhat of a power struggle between Adama and the new president, who was education secretary when the attack came and got the job because she was just about the only official left alive.

BTW, BSG r teh roxxor!!!111!!!

Yes, they had colonies. If I remember right, the humans were on 7 planets besides these colonies. Capria was the main or home planet. I could be wrong about that, it's been a while since I watched the original. I believe the scientist that sees the Cylon hottie is the equivalent of the human traitor in the original.

My favorite episode of the original series was where Starbuck and a Cylon become stranded on a planet after a fight and become allies, a la Enemy Mine. That may have been the inspiration for the last two episodes of the new series.

Ran across something iteresting on the net for you BSG fans out there. "NO LIMIT PYRAMID" as they played on both BSG shows.

You can download a program for free to play on your own home computer. Pretty interesting game after you play it for awhile.
It is 1.7 MB download, go to the site listed below, click on DOWNLOADS and then on PYRAMID 1.21.

In the original series there were 12 colonies.

The planets Caprica, Gemoni, Canceria, Piscon, Sagitara, Leo, Libra, Aquaria, Virgon, Aeriana, Taura, Scorpio. The mythical thirteenth Colony was Terra (Earth)

The Return of Starbuck was the easily the best episode of Galatica 80 - ....mind you that wasn't a difficult thing

Cartoon?

As far as I know the first series which aired in 1978/79 was always referred just as BSG, and the second series as Galactica (19)80.

I stand corrected. :)

GScholz, Galactica 80 was when they finally reached Earth and sent 2 guys down to snoop around. Glen Larson was trying to milk another season or two out of the franchise.

No, you're right in the sense that the characters, plots, and show were cartoonISH.  Even if the show was live action.

Isn't it weird how the world changes?

How could that serie look cool then when it's ridiculous now. Is it just the advancement in technology?
