Gran Theft Auto games
« on: February 11, 2005, 11:07:07 AM »
recently i was given a PS2 by a friend who wanted to get the new thin one.

i had a playstation 1, but only got 2 games for it, madden 2001 and metal gear solid.

since then i have only played PC games as the PC has better everything basically.

he also gave me GTA vice city to play.

it's a fun game and i'm kinda wrapped up in it just earning cash doing the taxi thing, and stunts on the motorcycle. anyway, i think this game is dangerous LOL.

the last 2 mornings on the way to work i was runnign a bit late, and i found myself getting mroe infuriated than usual at slow moronci drivers. i found myself looking at the sidewalk, and the opposing lane to get around the dumb slow car in front of me.

as a 32 year old adult, i know better than to do something insaine like that, but i was really suprised how a simple game can make you think differently in real life. i have never thought about shooting someone after playing a FPS game, or anything like that, i just know it's wrong.

what i think GTA does is slowly desensetized you by doing "small" bad things that aren't that bad like shooting someone, but then if you get desensetizied to one thing, what's the next step?

it is a fun game, don't get me wrong, but MAN i can see how it could corrupt a young mind easily, making life very different for them in the future.

man i sound like an old fogey talking like this LOL.
I don't know what to put here yet.

I'm all for banning that kind of games, clearly they're bad for the society.

I work with young people and I think that the guys who make these games need take a long hard look at themselves.

There is something fundamentaly wrong in glamourising murder  drug dealing and auto theft, and marketing it to young people.

The guys that make this stuff need to live in the parts of town torn apart by crime or spend time with the victims of this stuff. Then maybe they'd stop peddling this crime porn to kids!

:D
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

If kids can't differentiate between a game and real life, the parents are to blame.

They aren't peddling anything to kids. GTA has and always will be a mature game. It is made for people who are old enough to understand the difference between reality and fantasy.

Blaming crime and the downfall on society is foolish. Sometimes, yes, there are people who cannot understand and end up doing something they "saw in a video game" and end up hurting someone. But kids don't just buy these games....parents do.

If a kid does something they saw in a video game, it's the fault of the parent for providing the content when they didn't understand what it was about. You cannot hold game designers accountable for what they do because they create a form of entertainment. They should not and cannot be held responsible for things that happen "because" of their games because they do not market them as such. It's entertainment for adults, not kids.

im not for banning the games or quitting making them, but i do think they should be sold like liquor... only to adults.

if an adult is stupid enough to let their kids play the game then they go to jail for any crimes the kids commit.

funny thing is my buddy's 4 kids play games like the simpsons all the time.... though the driving part is like GTA, running over people, driving on sidewalks, crashing into other cars... all that.

You do realize these games are clearly labled for sale to those aged 17 and older?  I don't know about anyone else but by 17 I had at least a fundamental grasp of concepts like "right" and "wrong" and I even had the ability to distinguish "fantasy" from "reality."  (in case anybody's having trouble with this one, "reality" is the one with the ugly people)

Oh and 73, if you like Vice City you should pick up San Andreas. 100x more stuff to do, and a much more varied environment.

Vice City can have some hard missions later on in the game. I have it for pc. San Andreas is way beter than than VC imo.

SA should be out for the pc in June i think.

I loved driving around and pretending to be a serial killer picking up hookers and taking them to back alleys and shooting them with the revolver and taking my money back. lol

It got boring after i finished the game. Uninstalled now.

Yes I do take the point but parental advice stickers and such like don't realy work. sadly yes there are many parents who don't take full responsibility that too is true.

But I still feel that there is something a bit wrong with crime games. Its my opinion but I think its just one more thing adding to the mix that is making society go slowly awry.

Oh and if you're going to quote me Nefarious please do it acurately.

I think there is big difference between WW2 simulations and games that encourage criminality!

That's your opinion.

There is little difference between playing a make believe modern day criminal and a make believe WW2 criminal (Waffen SS).

we bomb quaint little towns (with churches!) to rubble and send in storm-troopers to opress the populace.  That's probably not a very nice thing to do.

I did not say Aces High. There are civilians to kill in plenty of other games that are FPS for WWII.

I win, you lose.
