35th FS, 8th FS P38L for Kev..second try
« on: February 12, 2005, 12:43:04 AM »
Here's one I think is doable Kev.

It would be the same yellow striping as the other one.  Note that the photos show it in process of getting the W on the tail so the serial would have come off and the yellow and black added to the top of the rudder like the other one.

Images show both sides and the close up of the left nose shows the pilots name etc.

Crew Cheif name is Wallisch,  his assistant CC  McWilliams

Probably from their time on Ie Shima in the Summer of 1945.

Thanks, any idea on the Helen and Louise colors?
Also I thought they all had the squadron badge on the right side of the nose?

Appears to be red outlined in black for the colors on Louise, Black outlined in red for Helen on the right side.

Helen apparently was someone close to the Crew Chief Wallisch as it shows up on another P38 he crewed for Ken Ladd previously.

As for the squadron badge, that may have been on most but apparently not this one, or at least not at the time.

As it appears to be in process of getting the paint scheme finished it would seem like the squadron badge could be added as well at some point.

Kinda like Bob DeHaven's bird.  The addition of color and art was an ongoing process depending on the pace of operations.

Yellow and black is the front half of the spinner not the whole thing.

Wing stripes are backwards.  Note in the photo how it starts outside the landing light and slants inward towards the tail.  Check that first profile I posted on the earlier "T"

Agreed that Helen might be just black.  It looked to me possibly that there might have been a thin outline.

I like the look thought :)

Kev ,

Can you give me a brief overview of Eye Candy - how it works, where to get it, etc.

Can you show a before/after pic?   I never thoguht of weathering as easy but you've indicated it is with this program.

Thanks!

Oboe -
Here is a pic with 1 layer weathering only, it is the fore/aft dirt streaks. I usually do up to 3, 1 long thin stripes, 1 shorter fatter (but less prominent, and 1 blotches (faded even more). I have accentuated the 1st layer to about 40% opacity in the pic so you can see it.

Before

1st layer only

Add a little more plus details

For wing dirt I use 90 long 10 wide, fuselage, tail etc 90 long 5 wide.
Not sure if the old eye candy is still available, I have a copy if you need it. New one is preview only and half the filters are disabled.
Tutorial for it is on skinners Heaven.
Basically create new layer, flood fill with white.
Open plugins and select eye-candy, HSB noise filter.
Set parameters according to Skinners Heaven.
Apply the filter and set the layer property to Multiply, play with the opacity. Takes  2 minutes :)
By changing the random seed value in HSB noise you get a different pattern each time.

Eye candy is a 2mb file if you have an ftp site or if your email will accept files that big.
