Proposed Computer Purchase
« on: February 14, 2005, 12:26:34 AM »
Hey all,  I am currently running a P3, 800Mhz, GeF 3 Ti200, 384MB RAM.  Below is a system I am two weeks away from purchasing through Newegg.   The VC is non-negotiable right now.  I'll probably upgrade it later on in the year.   Whatcha y'all think about this system?

Proc.  AMD Athlon 64 3200+

MB    CHAINTECH NForce4 Socket 939 - Model "VNF4/Ultra"

Mem   CORSAIR 184-Pin 512MB ECC REG DDR PC-3200

VC – SAPPHIRE ATI RADEON X600 PRO Video Card, 256MB DDR, 128-Bit, DVI/VIVO, PCI Express.

Case with 500W Power supply. (Current case isn't efficient enough to cool.)

I can get all of this for just under $600.   I will be using my DVD / CD+RW combo, old burner, and WD 120GB 8MB Cache HD, and Windows XP, and taking two thermaltake fans from old and putting into new.

Thanks in advance <>

No need for ecc reg memory, and you are better off with 2 sticks of memory.

Still, if you only get 512MB it might be worth a thought to get one stick for easier upgrade. But i would buy some low latency memory instead of the ECC with a gaming machine.

You want the ECC memory on servers for databases, webservers or computers for developement. When you go for pure office and gaming applications normal memory is faster and cheaper.

Note that the quality of power supplies that come with the case is mostly sub-par, should work but dont expect a high quality one.

Agree with schutt.....ECC will perform slower because of the error correction.  Better off without it, and it's cheaper not buying ECC.

Karaya....just built AthlonXP 3400.....your system will run great!

If you can afford it.....get 1024 PC3200...well worth it.  Better then 512.....more memory...faster you can fly!
