Need a little help please
« on: February 16, 2005, 10:04:06 AM »
Hi Mates

Just put a new video card in my PC ATI Radeon 9800XT 256MB.
PC is Dell Dimension 8100 1.8G CPU, 1G Ram.

What are the best video settings in AH for this setup?  What should I show in the "video settings".  What to check and what not?

Appreciate any assistance.  Not a real sharp PC guy.

Many thanks

None of the settings will hurt the video card. Push Ctrl-I ingame to bring up a box if info on the top of your screen, jump in a plane on an offline runway, and start messing with the settings until you have a frame rate of around 40.

The fastest the human eye can see (That I've heard) is 31 frames a second, but in furballs and around tons of trees the frame rate will drop, so better to set it up to about 40-50 by yourself on a runway.

Many thanks mate.  I will get to work and see what I can do.

I have been flying real ones since 1953 and can't figure out this PC.  Very nice work.

Nice card.  I should point out you are very CPU limited.  In other words, your CPU is not going to be fast enough to keep that video card busy.

Hi Roy

Thanks for your response.

How much CPU do you think this Intel850 Motherboard could take?  How much do I need? Is there somewhere to find out?

You mentioned you have a dell, nothing wrong with them, but they don't leave you much room to upgrade. As with any factory made PC.

If your budget allows it, and it wouldn't be too expensive. I would get a different computer case, doesn't have to be an expensive one, replace the motherboard, CPU, and RAM.

That would be the easiest way to do it.

From what I've seen, the 850 MOBO's were a socket 478 using Rambus memory and AGP 4x video slots.

Socket 478 you should be able to get a processor over 2 Ghz, and the Rambus memory IS faster.  You already have 1GB of memory.  The 4x AGP slot is a problem you cant overcome, but I'm not sure how MUCH difference it will make.  On my old system, switching from AGP 4x to 8x meant the difference in playability.  But then your processor is faster than mine was then, and you have a much faster video card than I did then.  Maybe yours will work ok.  Unless you can find a good deal on a processor though, I'd wait and upgrade the MOBO and Processor at the same time.

Well, if you're not computer savvy, it's best to have a geeky buddy do it for you. If you've got the cash, take out your video card, sound card, and anything else you feel is worthy (maybe RAM if it is compatible) and have your friend build you a new computer around it with something around a 2-3 GHz Pentium. Well, that's what I want at least :D

For like 170 bucks he could have a 2.8 Ghz CPU on the MOBO he has now.  The limiting factor is the 4x AGP slot.  Unless he has one with a 8x slot (I couldnt find one but I havent looked all that hard either), in which case I'd say spend the money and buy the CPU now, it will hold you for at least a year or two before needing to upgrade again.
