As much as I respect that point of view I think it a shame that her native language was not taught in parallel.  It was part of her and her decendents heritage. I learned Portuguese and English together.  Caused some interesting blank looks when I came to the US finally because I always used the word that best described what I wanted to say, be it Portuguese or English.

No, I just told you the Portuguese equivalents of the Spanish word, guapo. I wouldn't make fun of anyone in a language they did not understand. Learned that a long time ago...

Examle: My step mom is from Lisbon and it would have helped break the ice a bit when my dad remarried.
