A loved one gets sick.
« on: February 20, 2005, 01:45:07 PM »
Our youngest one got sick this week. Initially we werent to worried, but as time went on and she kept getting worse we grew more and more concerned. We stayed in touch with the doctor's office from day 2 on. We thought she had the flu because of all the vomiting, high fever at times and sometimes she had diarhea.

The vomiting got so bad that she couldnt even keep any liquids down. So last night my wife drove her to an emergency room where my little girl had an IV put in her to alleviate some pretty severe dehydration. 600ml of IV later (for a 21 lb girl) along with an unspecified amount of sugar water, she finally urinated again!

This morning she was playing and smiling again!! She ate and drank without vomiting, and has had not one....but TWO wet diapers so far! (Never thought I'd be happy to see a wet diaper heh) Atm she is asleep in her bed, no doubt still exhausted from being sick and the trauma of being in the emergency room for 9 hours.

The doctors last night did some tests on the urine sample she gave after 600ml of IV and said its not the flu but another virus (didnt say which one) that is REALLY nasty and is going around the Denver area. She also has a urine infection as a direct result of the viral infection.

It's amazing just how much stress builds up when family members become ill, especially when the young ones get sick. I didnt realize just how much stress I was feeling until after Siaf's comment in the thread about the Marine who might get the MoH. I laughed so hard at what Siaf said, and felt an immense amount of relief when I stopped laughing. Thanks again for the laugh Siaf, I truly needed it :)

Elfie,

Hope you little girl gets well soon! It's tough for a parent to see your child suffer. Hang in there guy. :(

She's getting better Maverick. We noticed she wasnt feeling well last monday. On tuesday the vomiting started, wednesday we called the doctor's office for the first time, and yesterday about 3pm was the last time she vomited. So far today....NO VOMIT WOOOHOOOO!!

We have had to go to the store to buy laundry detergent twice this week. Usually we only buy that about once a month heh.

Boy do I know what you mean.

Ask anyone who knows me on these boards, I've spent more damn time in hospitals with my kids over the past two years than anyone I know.

In fact...my youngest (the girl) was born the same morning both my sons were admitted to hospital.  The first one (oldest) was admitted at 1.30am (BAD astmah attack) , the second at 5.30am (pnemonia) and my daughter was born by emergency c-section at 8.30am.

Parenting can be a challenge.  ;)

Really glad to hear your little one is feeling better.

Glad she's getting better Elfie. Nothing's more stressful than having a sick child.

Good news Elfie.
I didn’t like the title of this thread, but I’m glad that all looks well.

I know the stress that you are going through.  My wife has been in the hospital for 13 days now.  The longer she stays the better.  After 25 weeks of pregnancy her water broke.  If the baby would have been born that early, it would have had a 70% change of survival.  Survival would include a 50% chance of a significant disability and a high likelihood of a less serious disability.  75% of moms give birth within 3 days after preterm premature rupture of membranes; another 15% within 2 weeks.  So far we have been very lucky and are at week 27 and 3 days.  The goal is 32 weeks, it happens sometimes.  At 32 weeks the risks are fairly near that of full term.  Everyday helps.
Without an effective amniotic sac, there is a serious risk of infection or the baby could crush the umbilical cord; either could be fatal.  The risks to my wife’s health (including fatality) have just shot through the roof.  I’ve been on the verge of throwing up for the past two weeks; most of the serious worrying that I have done in my life has been in the past two weeks.

I’ve always appreciated my perfect family, but this really drives it home.

My family and I will pray for you and your wife eskimo. Let's all hope your wife and baby make it full term! Hang in there bro, you just made all my stress look insignificant.

We'll be praying for you, your wife, and your unborn baby. :)

As rough as this is, I think it’s harder to have a child in a dangerous situation than an infant (I have two preschool daughters).  You have bonded so much more over time.  Your concerns for your child are far from insignificant.  Thanks for your prayers.

I know exactly how you feel elfie, our first born was diagnosed with a urinary infection at the age of 2 weeks. We were freaking enough with the first one let alone him being sick. He was admitted to the newborn care unit and he had to go through several injections, an iv and works.

My wife had a pretty difficult childbirth and she was put on antibiotics as a result. Nobody remembered to mention to us that we shouldn't give breastmilk to the child as the medicine transfers there.

That apparently caused the urinary infection and led to an allergy later on. Luckily the food allergy passed by the time he was 2 years old.

Anyway I'm glad to hear your little one is doing better.

Eskimo: Our first one had troubles from the 3rd week of pregnancy that had us run to the doc every two weeks, but nothing like that..  Keep your faith up. I was 100% afraid that I'd lose my child and my wife at delivery so I have a clue of what you're going through.

There's nothing I can really say except best of luck and small consolation as it may be, you're not alone.
