See if you have the newest driver for your onboard sound. With on board sound i had sound stutter and sometimes the sound totally messed up. With soundcard better framerate and much better sound quality.
I have no idea why they sell the top of the line motherboards with sound chip, IMO they would be better off without it.
Mostly because people who buy them like the option of not having to spend money on a separate sound card right off. The average computer user, even ones that build their own, often think of sound as a very minor detail.
And as a note, if you have an nForce motherboard that also has nForce sound, you wont have those problems. They are optimized to work just like an add on sound card and not use up CPU resources. Cheaper nForce motherboards use the RealTek or other soundchips and will give you the problems just like all the others.
