A couple of early model 82nd FG P38s
« on: February 22, 2005, 11:29:01 AM »
Flying in the MTO.  One is a G so it's no problem.  The F is probably the best known P38 from the 82nd FG, "Sad Sack" that was still flying alongside the G,s Hs. and Js, in April of 44.

Sad Sack being a cartoon character of the time btw.

Here's "Sad Sack"

Nice thing about this 38 is it covers a long time frame but the profile shows it early in her career in North Africa with the yellow surround to the fuselage star so it fits for any North African scenario etc.

Two questions about Sad Sack - pictured above:

I see the wing top insignia does not carry the yellow outline that the boom insignia has - what about the lower wing insignia?  Does that carry the yellow outline?

What are the 3 vertical lines directly above the kill markers?   Looks like "111" but I can't make it out.   There seems to be one more below the kill markers, too.

Thanks!

I don't believe it carried the yellow suround on any but the boom stars.  Also as this bird flew for so long, it would have carried the red outlined star and bar at some point and then the blue and white star and bar.  This is from her early days.

Image shows the nose art and the bomb symbols.

You are amazing Dan.   Thank you.

Now for the image of "Sad Sack" himself, I created the noseart as close as I could from the cartoon image you provided above, but with this new photo, I see it really should be more of a profile of him, not a 3/4 portrait view.   Also it appears his suit is different - is he wearing a an Army dress uniform with a garrison cap?  Or is it a dark business suit with a fez?

I've googled "Sad Sack" a few times but there are alot of birds with that name, and a number of images of the character but haven't found this particular profile yet...

Still workin' on it though.

Army dress uniform.  I couldn't find anything either so went with what I could find that was closest :)
