Two very good questions...

1.  What do you think is "too much" as far as the human toll is concerned?  Do you think democracy in the middle east will reduce terrorism or terror havens?

2.  I happen to feel that even an ELECTED leader that hates us is still better than a tyranical dictator that hates us.  Democracys are usually based on checks and balences.

1. I put that death toll at one- there's not one American life worth spending in Iraq, Somalia, Europe, Korea, Iran, Libya, or any other place around the world.

2. I couldn't care less if other leaders are elected or not- wasn't Hitler elected?- and I damn sure don't care enough to invest American lives to replace one tolotarian regime with another.

I guess the number would be the number of American lives that would be saved by said regime change. Since we dont know that number it does make it kind of an impossibility to pin it down. I am starting to think democracy in the middle east is going to increase terrorism. These fanatics are gaining freedoms they never had and are exploiting them. Seems to me that people have to be willing to stand up and demand freedom before it actually means something to them.

I don't mean just a leader.  I am talking most of their government. It might be slightly better but I dont think it was worth 1500 american soldiers, 300 or so contractors that have died, and all that money. Seems the change over there is more cosmetic than anything but only time will tell.

Iraq has never been about terrorism, freedom or democracy for Iraqis, or WMD either, so the questions are moot. The strategic imperative for invasion was determined in the late 1990's.

In the eyes of policy and doctrine makers, the costs so far are 'acceptable' in their view of the world in a few short years ahead without an invasion. Iraq is more about China than it is the middle east.

GS,

You can add gscholtz (Baghdad Bob), and now nuke to your list.
