I'd imagine to keep the side mounted .50s muzzle-flash from blinding the pilot, but I could be wrong.

Like the 50MM on the 262, did the 57MM on the Mossie eject a blinding light when it was fired?  It looks like it did but since it has a little bit of top protection i'm not sure........

I've never read of any issues with it.

The 50mm installation on the Me262 was never fully operational.  It was tested against American bombers, and then discontinued.  The 57mm armed Mosquitos saw quite a bit of service considering only 27 were built.

typhoon was the most feared attack plane as far as the german panzer crews we concerned..

B25 window

Partly right Urchin, it was to protect the pilots' vision from the muzzle blast from the 75mm cannon. This version of the Mitchell was used primarily as an anti ship weapon in the South Pacific, though it would do a number on any Japanese tank.:)
