So more then likely red outlined. But digging through the books there are color photos of US flown Spit from the same time frame with no outline to the bar and the star in just a blue circle.
Again the danger of relying on just the profiles

Looking for a photo of a US flown MTO Spit V with a definate blue outlined star and bar, as I'm wondering if they were in VIIIs by that time as that was late 43.
Just looking at a book on Air Force Colors ETO-MTO and it says the red outlined star and bar was basically used from June to August 44 when the look was changed to the blue outlined star and bar.
Wonder when this bird was flying? Sounds like the 31st and 52nd FGs were getting IXs from May of 43 onward before changing to VIIIs in early 44.
Gotta love a good mystery
