Anyone playing DW? I could use some tips on torpedo evasion.

They don't like you and don't want to play games with you because you are a smelly, cheese eating surrender monkey.

What do want to know? (6 yrs USN on SSN 699 here, '86-'92)

If you want to avoid a torpedo and you are in a sub you would cavitate, then dive and get deep and as fast as possible.

You may release counter measures but basically you want to get fast and into to deep water.

I don't feel like logging in to your board and I don't play DW so I don't know what it is you are looking for...

Duh, forgot about the registration part, my bad.

Yes, that is the info I am looking for. I didn't know about the initial cavitating on purpose part, cavitating is moddeled, but I haven't read anything about it in the doc yet, so I was supposing the effect on torpedoes/sonar detection would be moddeled. (is it?)

I usualy try to setup the incoming torp(s) at either 120° or 220° and make for sharp turn into the torp if it gets too close (relative to the volume of the pinging). I of course do this at the highest speed possible and as deep as I can go. I also setup a countermeasure 'barage' (2 low active/passive & 2 high/active/passive)

Buggers still get to me most of the time

By cavitating you create a disturbance in the water that may interfere with torpedos passive sonar.

Torpedos don't need to make contact with the hull to detonate. They are set to a range and an EM field will detect the metal hull and detonate.

So don't let them get too close. You can't out 'scissor'' them like a Spitfire..:p

By going deep you pass through thermal layers (water layers of different density and temperature). You need to get as fast as possible and dive. Instead of a sharp turn into the the torpedo turn away. You may be able to out run it.

Turning into them may work but if the torpedo passes close it wont matter. They just need to be close to kill you so I would turn away and run deep to out run them rather then 'avoid them'.

The best defense against torpedos is to not get spotted. Run silent, run deep...

Hey, I wouldn't know about Spitfire

Thanks again for the tips, I'm basicaly doing most of what you just said, have been pretty much successfull so far, but there's sometimes a sneaky bastid I didn't spot from afar that sends me some ASROC when I fire on his buddy, or a chopper ... then the torps get too close for comfort.

I'm going to read up more on the Subsim forums (duh) and come back here if not sattisfied. :D

I dont do the modern Subsims. Had too much of that in real life.  I do like the WWII subsims though.  :)
