XX, ouch!   I had a bulging disc ONCE.  Hurt so bad, I wouldn't wish it on someone I wanted dead.

Couple of years ago suffered a herniated disc that pressed againt the cyatic nerve...very painful down the legs and stiff back...Looked like Fred G. Sanford walking around. Little did I know it also affected some internal workings.....and yes, pinching a loaf is a very humiliating and painful experience.

Just on the recovery end of a herniated disc....L4/L5.  An old training injury that is acting up more and more.  Pain killers did nothing so I went started taking some  antiinflammitories, this helped out a lot and I was able to avoid surgury (so far).  My surgeon told me to take glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate, which is available over the counter and almost everywhere.  So far it seems to be helping....

got a bunch of busted vertebrae from back when.

I used to just resign myself to i-3 days a year in the same exact condition your describe... I never knew what would set it off so that got me thinking that it must be related to the muscles.

About 10 or so years ago I started doing situps with on of those old frame things that kinda roll you up to a situp (thrift stores allways have em for a couple of bucks).  I don't get all weird about it... 40-50 a day after work before I jump in the shower.  start with whatever... just make it something that is so easy that you are ashamed to make an excuse not to do it... takes like 3 minutes.

I haven't been laid out since.

<-- another pitiful herniated disc guy. Man, it was/is the worst. Still not over it after almost 5 years.

lazs's advice is good. I also hang from a high bar for a few minutes a day and building the back muscles has really helped too.
