Weird PC issue
« on: March 17, 2005, 06:11:56 PM »
OK Maybe I'm paranoid but this has too many coincidences.

1.  Every now and then I'll be using my computer and the mouse will shoot for the start menu.  It's an optical mouse so I figured this was just a glitch

2.  I came home from work yesturday and there were a few Icons on my desktop that were all lined up in a row.  (not like auto arranged but picked out.  (3 were games, VCD made easy, Stardock, and cool edit pro)

3.  This morning Edonkey was running and I NEVER use that program anymore.

Is it possible for somone to take control over my computer remotly through the internet?  If so what XP functions do I check to make sure this is disabled?

It is...

Go to Control Panel, Double click System, go to Remote tab, make sure there are not check marks in either Remote Assistance or Remote Desktop.

Click Apply. Click Ok.

Now double click Administrative Tools, Double click Services go to Remote Desktop Help Session Manager, and double click on it. Click "STOP" and then select DISABLED from the drop down menu just above "STOP".

Remote access
Dunno all the techicalities but my son claims he has friends that know how to do this and goof on their friends doing it

Dunno exactly how they do it but
According to him they get the ususpecting prey to click on some kinda link which installs a prog on their machine then they mess with the guy.
He claims they often will make the door on the CD drive open and close by itself as wll as start running progams.

Did a quick search I performed on "Controlling a computer from remote locations"

1st link I clicked prodced this

http://www.techsoup.org/howto/articlepage.cfm?ArticleId=341&topicid=3

so I guess yea it is possible

Consider scanning for spyware too.  Your computer could be used as a zombie.  You may be inadvertently hosting illegal stuff like cracked software or kiddy porn via edonkey (as an example).  Find out where the files are stored for it and see if someone has uploaded stuff there.

What about "remote desktop help sessions"  and "remote procedures call"?  Both of those are "started"

RPC you need, it handles your intardnet.

I don't have a Remote Desktop Help Sessions, just the Session manager which I disabled.

I also suggest STOPing and DISABLING Remote Registry.

Sorry for caps, just want to make it stand out.

Gun, also download these programs and run them (make sure to get updates before you run them).

Spybot S&D 1.3 http://www.download.com/3000-8022-10122137.html

Do the Immunization too.

AdAware

Stinger
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

Top two are Malware/Adware removers and the last is a virus checker.

Just to make sure you are clean and they didn't get anything in your system.
