Skuzzy...Wassup with Savvis?
« on: March 10, 2005, 03:26:40 PM »
For the last at least two months when I get into the 12th and 13th Hops of my connection my pings have averaged in the low 30s' until I get into the St.Louis Savvis System.

Below are my last 4 hops.....all Savvis before hitting the server.

10) 208.175.10.97 32ms Chicago Savvis
11) 208.172.3.86   35ms acr2-so-1-0-0. Chicago Savvis
12) 208.172.1.202 93ms scr1-at-1-2-0-960 stls1.Savvis
13) 219.91.187.39 102ms   ....................

I'm using Premium Roadrunner....paying more for greater upload and download speed.  Have the techies coming to adjust or match upload and dload speeds to even out.  Nothing wrong with the Roadrunner service....but when I get into the Savvis system the connection bogs down by over 200%.

Can't blame this on RoadRunner......I've been pinging AH server and ALWAYS get the same results....they vary by a few ms of course.  But Savvis is definately not helping me reap the benefits of having a higher speed connection.

Looks like I'm paying for something that Savvis is screwing.

What's up with this Skuzzy?

If you read the open "sticky" at the top of the forum it would answer your question.  Also try a search on "Savvis" and you would find multiple threads dealing with them.

Read the Sticky...pertained to Savvis in Chicago.

I have no problems with Chicago as you can see.  Trouble in St.Louis where the server is located.

All savvis have had issues at one time or another in the last two months.  St Louis, Los Angeles, Chicago, Denver...................

Seriously, just do a search of the BBS with the keyword "savvis"

I did, it came up with 87 threads!

yeah, denver is consistently "slow" and has frequent, yet sporiadic packet loss.
Surrounded by suck and underwhelmed with mediocrity.
I'm always right, it just takes some poepl longer to come to that realization than others.

Did a search as suggested.  Knew Savvis was a problem but didn't know it was that widespread.  That many posts and tracerts of that magnitude told me a great deal.  I thought Sprint was bad....Savvis just rolled into first place.

What can be done?  As Skuzzy says we'll have to deal with them somewhere down the highway.  I know they're losing money hand over fist (by all recent financial reports)....so they'll probably do what's in the best interest for them....and I don't think high on their list will be connection issues with gamers.

Skuzzy (and many of the folks on the BBS) know well my feelings about Savvis, so I wont bother to reiterate most of them.  Suffice it to say I have some personal experience with the company from a few years ago when I still lived in St Louis.  They dont like to spend money on repairs and/or upgrades, nor do they like to spend money on the people who do such work.  Network techs are like janitors as far as these guys are concerned, so dont expect them to employ the best or the brightest, because those guys moved on a long time ago if they could.  The brass could care less about customer service and quality of service, their interest is in money.  Or rather, their interest is in looking big and important to the rest of the world.  Thats why when they DO spend money, its not on silly things like new hardware, its on things like buying bankrupt companies they cant afford, or seeing their name up in lights in the Savvis Center in St Louis.

Bottom line, not mych you can do but wait and hope.  And keep telling Skuzzy, and keep sending him copies of your bad routes.  Enough of them, maybe something will happen.

We are working on it.  It's not something that can happen overnight.

Skuzzy and Star....thnks for the replies and the info.  One would think that customers of Broadband Companies such as Time Warner etc. would notice that they aren't getting what they are paying for and it's not the problem of their ISP.  Maybe if enough customers knew they weren't getting the perfomance they are paying for (in this instance not the Providers fault) and registered enough complaints with their Providers about Savvis, and also inform them that they aren't receiving the product they assumed would improve the speed of their connection because of Savvis that the Providers would also get on Savviss' back?

(Could that be a world record for the longest sentence?)

LOL

:lol

Sure, complain to your ISP.  I have.  Keep letting Skuzzy know you have problems too, and let him add his voice.  Maybe he can vent a litte on them.  :)

Seriously though, I dont envy Skuzzy being where he is.  It's tough recognizing there's a problem, but being unable to fix it.  While you might think it would be easier because he can pass the buck on this one, I'm sure it aggravates him just as much as it does the players.

The biggest concern I have about this is Savvis is the second largest backbone in the U.S.  ANd you know who is the largest? Sprint.
Trying to find a routes that would avoid either of them, for everyone, is impossible.  I just have to find a way to get the most people I can through the net while avoiding these two.

It ain't easy.

The problem is the two largest backbone companies in the U.S. are both pathetic and unavoidable.  Savvis was fine until they acquired Cable & Wireless.  I knew one of two things would happen.  Either they would fix the C&W problems, or simply inherit them.
Unfortunately they took the latter choice.

None of the other large ISP's can do much about the situation as all Savvis and Sprint have to do, is what they are both doing now.  Sit back and ignore the issues.
I miss the days when ISP's actually cared about the quality of service and backbone providers were actually proactive about fixing problems.

All I can do in the meantime is keep screaming.
