Colors of Fall 1942
The following is an excerpt from an interview of Ilmari Juutilainen, (Finland’s top ace with 94 victories) by Jon Guttman.

Question - What about your first encounter with an I-16 on December 31?
Juutilainen: That was a classic, old time aerial duel. I was initially in a very good position behind that Red pilot, but he saw me and started a hard left turn. I followed, shooting occasionally, testing his nerves. Our speed decreased as we circled tightly under the cloud deck, which was as low as 600 feet. My opponent's fighter was much more agile than mine, and he was gradually gaining the advantage, so I decided to pull a tactical trick on him. As he was getting into my rear sector, I pulled into the cloud, continuing my hard left turn. Once inside it, I rolled to the right and down, out of the cloud. I had estimated right - I was again behind my opponent. When he next saw me, I had already closed to a range of about 100 yards. He apparently decided to outturn me, as he had done before. I put the sight on him and squeezed the trigger. My tracers passed a few yards in front of him, and I eased the stick pressure to adjust my aiming point. My next burst struck his engine, which began to belch smoke. I continued firing, letting the tracers walk along the fuselage. Then once more I pulled hard, taking a proper deflection and shot again. There was a continuous stream of black smoke as the target pitched over and went into the forest.

The interview in its entirety can be found here. http://www.sci.fi/~fta/finace01.htm

Arena Settings
- Terrain Finruska
- Fuel 1.0- Icons short
- Ack .5 (.7 CT norm 1.0 MA norm)
- Fighter and Bomber warning range 42,000 (about 8 miles)
- Tower range set to 42,000 (for display only to match the above setting)
- Radar off
- Friendly collisions off
- Killshooter off
- Wind East at 16 knots 6,000 to 20,000 feet

Designer Notes
The reason I set the Tower range the same as the Fighter and Bomber warning range is to show the squads on the clipboard how far the warning radius is. It serves no other purpose than that since radar is off.

FM2 sub for Brewster. The current plane set in Aces High is weak for Finland, but the terrain makes an event worthwhile.

I feel that the IL-2 is a much more capable aircraft than the JU-87, and we should reconsider wether IL-2's get a second life.  The gun package alone is reason enough, but it is decent at maneouvers, and incredibly tough.  Its only drawback is it is under powered.  The Ju87 on the other hand is much more fragile, even more under powered, and the guns stink.  Two lives in an IL-2 is way better than two lives in a Ju-87.

I think it depends entirely on what the targets are. If we're talking about Strikes against objects, the Ju-87 with the MOAB is more effective than the Il2. Against Vehicles, the IL-2 has a major advantage. Either way, if either plane is jumped by enemy fighters, they are ****ed, and will end up in the tower soon enough.

A flock of IL-2's has a much better chance of getting to target than a flock of Ju-87's, no matter what the target.  The IL-2 is faster, tougher, and has better guns.  The Ju-87 is slower, more fragile, and has peashooter guns.  A flock of Ju-87's will struggle to shoot down a single enemy if engaged.  A group of IL-2's can defend themselves much better.

The difference between a Ju-87 and a IL-2 is approximately the same as a TBM verses a Val.  In Pacific scenario's, I don't regularly see TBM pilots, get extra lives, whereas the Val's almost always do because of their survivability, and chance of making it to target.  The IL-2 is closer to a TBM than it is to a Val.

I have had to attack a swarm of IL-2's in the past on a scenario like this, and it was not easy.  The IL-2's took out about half of our planes.  Some shot down, some had dammage and could not continue.  Then the IL-2's got to reup in new planes.  I doubt we would have had the same result if we had attacked a group of Ju-87's.  The problem is, the IL-2 only needs a snap shot, and it will destroy or disable a plane.  The Ju-87 needs a sustained burst, and that is something it won't get if it is carrying a MOAB.  :)

To some, the difference between the two will not seem like much, but in reality, the gun package of the IL-2 equates to a significant advantage.

That would be up to 68KO. He can change things as he sees fit, though wrote the original design.

Having been slaughtered in Ju87's more than once in Squad Ops I feel (and most would agree) those need a 2nd life. Not so sure about the IL2. We have been slaughtered in those also, but managed to take a few with us. Personally I would not want to fly an IL2 without a solid large escort, but a 2nd life... don't know.

I agree Daddog, both IL-2's and Ju-87's should be escorted, as should TBM's, SBD's, Vals and Kates.  I think that the aircraft that are granted second life status should be carefully considered, and based on more than just the type of aircraft it is.

In my opinion, there are two criteria for consideration.  First, does it have reasonable defensive capabilities?  The TBM, definately does, due to its guns and toughness.  The SBD has decent guns, and the IL-2 has great toughness.  The Vals, Kates and Ju-87's have pathetic defensive guns and toughness.  Second, is how effective is the plane when engaged by enemy fighters.  The IL-2, TBM and SBD have effective forward firing guns.  The IL-2 is by far the most effective here.  The Val and Ju-87 are nearly useless, and the Kate is completely useless with no forward firing guns.  I think that the Val, Ju-87 and the Kate are in completely different classes than the IL-2, TBM and SBD when everything is considered.

I would not give extra life to IL-2's and TBM's, and only occasionally to the SBD, depending on the setup.  The Val, Ju-87 and Kate almost always warrant an extra life regardless of the setup.

This is just my way of looking at it, and I offer this comment just for your consideration.  Feel free to structure the event as you see fit.  Just for the record, our squad requested Russian side, so I do not have an underlying motive for discussion on this topic.

for the record I don't think any planes should get second lives. Some day's it's Turkey, some days it's feathers. But that's why I'm not in charge :p

Rgr TracerX, I did not take it as anything but constrictive comments and those are always welcome. :)

I would add a third by looking at the fighters it would be engaging. A Val for example can dance with an early war F4F or P-40B. In an early PAC event I don’t think I would give a Val a 2nd life, (but always a Kate). Then put the Val in a 1943 or 1944 event with P-38’s, F4U’s, F6F’s and you bet I will give them a second life. :)

I actually like the Ju-87.  I think that while it's defensive armament is weak, it still can make a respectable attack run when en masse.  I like the 87's performance characteristics, especially it's ability to egress rater quickly and handle well at lower altatudes.  But then again I am weird :D .

While I am chimeing in my two cents I want to give a compliment to those that planed and ran the previous squad ops, and to those involved in this one.  I am sure it will be great fun.
