oboe!...OD/Gray 479th P38J info
« on: March 21, 2005, 02:09:51 PM »
This one might be nice to try.  OD/Gray J.

Serial number is 42-68029
Name:  "Little Edris"  named for pilot's wife
Pilot:  Lt. Berkley E. Hollister
Codes L2-V

Lost on July 5, 1944 with another pilot, Lt. Clayton F. Proctor.  Might be a nice way to honor a lost pilot in the game.

Images from the 479th FG Group History including the cover painting.

It appears from the painting and photos that they oversprayed the white spinner and ID bands on the engines as well as the NMF nose.  Color is not the same as the OD, so probaby an RAF dark green or something similar.

Hopefully this doesn't disappear too far as you are headed out of town, but I figured I'd post it anyway

We'd love to see a 479th P-38J skin :)

Wouldn't mind seeing this as a P-51D skin, for those in the 479th that fly the Mustang.

Ack Ack if HTC is considering rotating skins I can look at updating my metallic mustang skin and make one of these.  I'll check and see if I have any further references for these skins in the meanwhile.

I've just picked up a new book that has over 500 profiles for the 4th, 20th, and 55th fighter groups.  It covers pretty much everything they flew (P-51s,Spits, P-38s, and P-47s).

I can also check my Mustang nose art books and my other mustang references to see if I can find these birds or ones from the 479th FG.

Personally Im not very fond of the invation stripes.

Or rather Im not fond of them in a design way, but as a occurance to paint all planes of an invation with the same stripes is cool. So Im a bit torn on the issue.

But I like it better with plain non striped paint schemes.

Tex

That would be appreciated by myself and the rest of the 479th .

OK Oboe, just in case you want to go silver for the 479th guys.  This is a nice one.  There are more photos of the nose art etc in the 479th history.

Whew.  Haven't had a chance to seriously think about these yet, but I think if I go nat metal, it'll be a correct version of Scat II, or Boomerang (love the red rudder).

If I go green, I might try to get one in from the 82nd or 55th FGs. I might play around with the noseart to Little Edris and see if I can reproduce it.  I've never seen Forest Green as an accent color, that is kindof unique...

Little Edris is going to work I think, so that will be my 479th bird.

Lots of touchup left, but I'll get a screenshot up when I can.    Thanks for finding that one, Dan -- the deep green nose and spinner/nacelles looks very nice with the OD scheme and full invasion stripes!
