Business Cards
« on: March 21, 2005, 05:03:58 PM »
I wonder if anyone here has used the internet to order business cards.  I've just placed orders with vistaprint and buyprintingdirect.com for their 'sample' 250 free business cards to see how the quality comes out.

I've created a "premium" card with each that is basically this.

So far it seems that buyprintingdirect.com has a higher quality image than vistaprint.  When enlarged for the background on vistaprint, it made the photograph very blurry and very poor quality.  buyprintingdirect.com was clear and crisp.

The final draft has white text with no 'outline' box like MSpaint gave my very rough example.  Anyone have experience with orders like these or somewhere better to order from?

Thanks

I can get em wholesale for 19.95 per 500 cards- the quality is always good. What you need to look for is a manufactuer that does UV coating on the cards- that gives em a plastic like appearance.

Is the UV coating the same as a glossy finish?

The glossy finish is achieved by printing on a glossy paper or by a UV coating, with the UV coating being a much glossier, and more durable, finish. Make sure whoever you use offers UV coating.

Outstanding, Airhead!

They had a great background of a Cessna 182 flying over clouds with the sun shining.  I tinkered a bit and am very please with what I have come up with.  I placed an order and I hope they come out.  Thank you sir!

I am still awaiting my 'freebies' where I only had to pay Shipping so I wasn't losing anything other than $5 for each 250 card order.  Thanks for the reccomendation.

Here's the card :)

Make sure the picture is 300 dpi at business card size with 3mm extra on each side [ie length + 6mm, height + 6mm] (this is for bleed, to avoid nasty white lines on the edges). Otherwise it'll be either blurry or pixilated. You can get away with lower dpi, but 300 will cover 150 lpi and 175 lpi on the finished card, and as we've got no idea what screen your card boys use, too much is always better than not enough.

NB there's not much point in enlarging it in photoshop or whatever (once the pic is made small, making it large won't put the missing info back) - start with the largest shot possible.

For your card you'd want gloss art card (otherwise the colour will go flat), and then if you want a matt finish use a matt lamination. It gives it a satin sheen kind of feel which is very classy. Otherwise go gloss lam if you want really shiny.

Another important thing to think about is the card weight (ie thickness). Not sure what options you have over the 'net, but 210-300gsm is better, depending on the card they use.

My smiling mugshot started out as about as a wallet sized photo and I shrunk it.  I used a regular .jpg in MSpaint to crop it and then uploaded it to the site.

Here are the 'features' of their cards.  I don't know what 12 pt stock is but I know that having a flaccid card doesn't go over well with the ladies.  Or is that something else...eh who knows.  I have a card that someone gave me in Las Vegas and it's real firm with one side being glossy (as though it appears coated) and the other side has some photos with a "specializing-in" line.  I've also got a card from my buddy's band which they went the cheapest route possible and its tissue paper compared to the manly har-har business card of the other guy.  Here's some specs:

Finished size: 2" x 3.5" - Three printing options to choose from:
Full Color Front/No Color Back Business Cards
Full Color Front/One Color Back Business Cards
Full Color Front/Full Color Back Business Cards
All Business Cards are printed on premium 12 pt. card stock paper.
Includes FREE UV gloss coating on the front side of the business card.
FREE online design with over 1,000 professional templates; or
Upload your own custom designed business cards at no extra charge.

Found a site that translated from arcane nonsense measurements to good old down to earth metric and 12pt is about 260 gsm so that's probably butch enough to score with most ladies. ;)
