Last bomber of formation
« on: March 25, 2005, 11:35:05 AM »
Anyone run into anything strange when shooting down the one remaining bomber of a formation?  I had two incidents last night.

I "ined" a formation of b17, blew up the left drone, solidly painted the lead, and pulled up.  Friendlies came in finished the lead which I got the kill for.  As the friendlies extended I came back in and shot the tail off the last one.  I never got a message (kill or assist) for the last b17

A few hours later, I blew up the left drone of a b24, pinged the lead.  Got an assist on the lead when other friendlies shot it down.  I came around and settled in at D800 and started shooting past friendlies who were closer.  I solidly painted the right wing of the last B24 3 out of 4 bursts, smoking its engine #3.  The B24 broke apart from someone elses fire.  Again no message.

Not upset about it, I thought it was just...weird.

Got one better than that. I think it was Lancs (shot lots of bombers last night), but the last bomber of the formation (others were dead) was jumping up and down by 1K feet or more for 15 or 20 seconds, spinning like it was augering, then leveling off and rolling. I hung back for a few seconds, then figured what the Hell, it's dead, and zoomed on past. looked back and it was level and shooting the crap out of me, or at least trying. Looped back and killed it, no kill or assist, but it did ping me a few times.

Just a thought, it might have something to do with the time it takes the person flying them to move, the time it takes the server to register the move, and the time to your FE when you shoot it down, etc.

Just from a simple matter of figuring the effective cone of fire from 3 buffs centering the fire of all guns I'm visible to on my plane, I always attack the drones first, and from the side if possible.  It's harder to line up on the diagonal, but more survivable.  As I drift behind the formation, I rudder slide to the side, then roll out and come around again.  Once the first drone goes down, I reverse directions and go for the other one.  Leaving the lead plane for last I never have a problem getting all 3 kills (if I survive that long lol).

Nope, last night was wierd for me and others too.  I hit several things from bombers to tanks,  Killed and assist in taking out several items,  no kill message and no assist messages,   was like that for several hours last night.

I was not the only one ,because i heard people expressing there dislike about the occurance over range and few squadies over squad vox.   No biggie here either just advising ya of my experence last night.  :p     server burp!  hehe

Wednesday late, attacked a lone formation of lancs at 15k in a 262. Came in fast, plastered lead, then left drone. Lead popped almost immediately, wing came off left drone, went into a particularly colorful death spiral. Right drone started to dive, losing maybe 1 or 2k feet, then just started spinning (wildly) in a nose down position, without losing any more alt for a good 20-30 seconds, resuming level flight at speed after the damaged plane finally met his demise in the forests below. I've seen a lot of odd stuff with drones before, but nothing I'd attribute to anything more sinister then the delay of the buff pielut racing around trying to get in another buff/gun position while taking all sorts of damage.

On a vaguely related note, I've seen bomber formations that appeared to be changing positions, ie, lead moves right, right moves left, left moves to lead position, sometimes over and over. Someone told me this was the pilot repeatedly jumping from plane to plane to induce lag. Any one heard of this? I'm a bit skeptical, but curious. I don't see this behavior with a majority of bombers, but I do see it occasionally.

cheers

Ive seen the incredible teleporting drones.  This wasnt the case though.  Both times the other buffs were completely gone and the pilot was in the last bomber for at least 5-10 seconds.

Maybe it was a system wide thing like tactic said.

Huh.  Only experience I had vs buffs last night was a formation of Lancs, I attacked them in just the manner I described above (was in an F4U-1).  It took a few passes to kill them all with the .50s and I did take damage, but I got all 3 kills and landed them (plus a 110 I had already taken out).  Perhaps the problem was already solved by then?  It was after 10pm for me, which is already the next day for most of you.  Last flight before I logged off for the night.

The parameters for ditching are very generous right now (both in speed and angle).
