I'm not a religious guy but i respected him all the same.  He even played his part in defeating communism.  He could speak what? 8 langauges?  I'm sure he would say his name in which ever langauge was appropriate.

Oh, he was a fan of football too.:)
"Willy's gone and made another,
Something like it's elder brother-
Wing tips rounded, spinner's bigger.
Unbraced tailplane ends it's figure.
One-O-nine F is it's name-
F is for futile, not for fame."

I wonder if the body will be on public display. I mean since he is such a famous person.

Hmmm, well, he did good things, but he also let bad issues slide.... things that the Catholic Church did that may in the future be labelled atrocities (the buring of kiddie fiddling cases springs to mind).

I'm 50/50 on him being a "great man" because of this - perhaps if he had been in another religion.... but he had a chance to clean his faith up and he missed it.

Vulcan,

No leader can be 100% effective on every freaking area of their position. If you want to hold him in contempt for less than perfect effectiveness in everything, that's your problem, not his.

FWIW I hold the American Clergy of the Catholic Church at fault for that particular fiasco far more than a man over 2,000 miles away.

The main way to aleviate that problem is for the clergy involved to realize vows are not "negotiable" nor are they "conditional". Allowing Priests to marry would go a long way to helping as well but it goes against a very fundamentalist belief of the Church.
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

Not to tarnish this thread, but Mav, that problem isn't a US problem, its a world wide problem.

That notwithstanding, I believe he was a good man.
