CPU temp and fan speed

Is there a way to check cpu temp in Windows XP w/o resorting to doing a restart and watching the screens as they fly by?

MY cpu is running about 15 degrees hotter than normal it seems and the fan speed seems a bit lower than normal also which probably explains why the cpu is running hotter.

Keep in mind though any hardware monitoring is only an estimate.  This goes for the monitor in your BIOS.  They generally deviate anywhere from 5-15 degrees.  To get a true temperature you'll need a thermal probe($$).

I bought a new cpu fan today. Cpu temp dropped 20 degrees :-)

My cpu was only running at 140, but I am paranoid about losing a fan now. The last 3 vid cards I had fail on me failed because the fan quit. I verified at the shop that they install these fans at about 2400 rpm. Mine was running at 1800 rpm.

For some reason the old fan didnt have the manual speed adjustment attached. The new one is running at about 3000rpm, should probably turn that down a bit.

Thanks for that link, I do like being able to check the cpu temp w/o having to do a restart.

Hey that speed fan is kinda slick, keeps me from having to go to the bios and check temp.

Yep it is very handy.  In fact it prevented me from almost frying my CPU, when I had CPU temp issues last month.  I ended up taking off the fan & heatsink to find out the builders had used a thermal pad instead of paste.  Bought some Arctic Silver 5 and fixed that problem real quick.  I'm satisfied now with temps considering I bought a PCI case fan that pulls air from the outside in as well.
