critters in the box me thinks....
« on: April 18, 2005, 01:38:16 PM »
I'm thinking I've got issues of some kind again.....

Horrible performance in AH and my 3D mark (2003) bench thins morning was 50% or less of what it should be. I'll check tonight to make sure nothing was running....

I usually run AVG & Panda anti virus
Hijack this
Ada-ware
new Microsoft spyware beta
Housecall

Love to see a trouble shooting stickie on various virus spyware registry checkers etc....

All suggestions on troubleshooting appreciated....

Normally I have about a 4 hour tinker window then go nuclear and F-disk it all....:D

If you don't already, try running something like motherboard monitor or speedfan to monitor your temps and fan speeds.  You may have a heat issue that is throttling your cpu.  Get cpuz and see if everything is running up to speed as well.

Hit ctrl-alt-del and check the processes list to see if anything is hogging your cpu.  Not everything shows up there but it's one place to start looking.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

You might want to run a rootkit checker.

One (free) example is http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/

While I'm no fan of f-secure products it won't hurt you to run it. It'll detect hidden processes such as sophisticated spyware.

Spyware is getting smarter.  A rash of it recently got dumped onto the Internet which detects the more popular spyware checkers and then hides from them.
They also stop running when you bring up the task manager so the CPU usage looks normal.

I read about one new malware program which actually infects Adaware and Spybot (some others too) which cuases them to download and install other spyware/malware programs each time they are run.  Although I have not been able to find this one yet, so it could be a good rumor.

By the way Humble, is that an NVidia card?  Some of NVidia's drivers have caused some over-heating issues with the cards (FX6xxx line) which is causing them to go half-speed.
The bad news is you cannot fix the problem by simply changing the driver.
