Memory upgrades?
« on: April 11, 2005, 04:20:18 PM »
Okay my computer right now has 640MB of ram. It has one 512 pc2700 and one 128 pc2700 chip. I want to just buy another 512mb ram chip but I see lots of good priced pc3200 512mb ram. Would it hurt my comp to have one 512mb pc2700 and one 512mb pc3200? Or do I have to buy another 512mb pc2700?

Nope.  The PC3200 will just run at PC2700 speed.

I've had great luck with both brands.

Check out Crucial.Com too, as well as Egghead.Com

Since there is already a thread on memory upgrades I guess I'll post this here.

Just upgraded from 512 to a full gig of ram.

There anything else I need to do for the game?

Would a reinstall be a good idea or doesnt it matter?

Any settings changes I should make?

Honestly. I really haven't noticed much of a difference at all.
If there is an improvement I'd call it slight.

No improvement in game play at all. I was hoping to get an improvement of at least a few FPS or the ability to bump the detail sliders up a bit But If anything it seems/feels more like a slight drop in performance.

But that is based only on last night and the net for some reason was acting kinda wiggy last night.

I've learned never to base my in game performance on one night of gameplay. Especially after a new version is released

Memory upgrades won't speed up you games much. What it does is prevent stuttering as new scenes are loading and speeeding up loadtimes on FPS games etc.

I didn't notice that much difference going from 512 to 1 gig either. I did itmainly for Forgotten Battles.

I got about an average of 5-10 fps increase upgrading from 512 to 1GB of RAM.  The biggest difference is you can preload your textures and skins, and still have memory left over for the computer to use.  As FOGOLD said, its going to help smooth things out alot.  With the new version I dont know what the change will be for you, if any.  Results seem to be mixed.  My frame rates increased with the update, as they did for many others.  However, alot of other folks have noticed a drop in frame rates so who knows?

Hey I got my pc3200, 512mb corsiar ram stick 2 days ago, and my comp is working great. I'd say I've seen a 30%-40% gain in loading speeds. Games and programs run alot smoother! But now that I've got 1gig of memory I'm confused about my vitual memory size. My comp tells me that my recommened vitual memory size is 1500MB.(I've got a 40GB hard drive) I just think its strange I haven't seen my new physical  memory get past 500mb's. Shouldn't my comp use the faster physical memory more then the vitual memory???
