Low FR's. New video card needed?
« on: April 27, 2005, 11:42:29 PM »
My FR's have continued to deteriorate with each AH upgrade. Even running 800x600, sliders down to "performance", pre-loading skins & textures, Hardware Vertex Processing box checked and Max Texture size of 128. Wondering if a new video card would help....not one of those $200+ video cards, mind you....
  My system is as follows:
  P4 2.8GHz 533FSB w/512 cache
  512 MB DDR333 PC2700 Non-ECC Memory
  GeForce FX5600-8X 128MB Video Card w/latest drivers
Refresh rate maxed out at 85

  Any advice appreciated.

First off, let me qualify this by saying I know jack poop about anything. That said. .....What operating system are you running? You really have only 152 MB Memory? You looking at spyware and background processes?

Assuming you hav 512 memory not 152,  Iwould slap another 512 ram in that baby to increase CPU performance.

AH is CPU intensive, not Video card intensive...

152 RAM isn't possible unless you have some really weird sticks. PC2700 RAM isn't the best. Do some research and compare it to some of the other speeds and what speed your motherboard can handle.

2 things.

First of all, it makes it harder to help when you post in 2 forums about the same issue.  If Skuzzy thinks it belongs somewhere else, he wont yell if its in the wrong place, he'll just move it for you.  Cross posting is frowned on.  Just an ettiquite FYI.

Second, the problem is probably the video drivers, if you truly have the latest ones.  As I answered it in the Tech Support forum here

http://www.hitechcreations.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=149316

The 5600 should be sufficient, although its a lower end card, to handle your needs.  It could depend on the manufacturer.  If you like to step up, I've seen 6600's going for under $200.  You just have to shop around.  That one WOULD use the newer drivers.

Same issue, yes. Same question, no. In the Tech Support forum, I was seeking a solution with my existing card. In the Hardware and Software forum, I asked opinions on whether or not I needed a new card. Options ya know.....

He's got the right memory for his MB...he's need a 200 bus for the PC3200...I'm guessing spyware also....system should be "OK"...what are your frame rates?

System seems ok... should get you at least playable frame rates.

How much space is on your c drive free?

What sound hardware are you using?

When did you defrag your hard drive the last time?

No offence to anyone but the amount of ram certainly isn't his problem and increasing it would not boost framerates in AH. Even less of a factor is his ram PC rating which obviously matches the CPU he's using.

Low framerates are most likely due to his display card and/or a combination of bad system drivers. Spyware is another good suspect. The problem might even be sound related if his system has a problem there (causing the soundsystem to hang the rest).

LOL throw RAM at it , always seems to be a common answer. I just hate when people actually run out and buy a stick and it does nothing but cost them money . my 2 cents ... 38
