That is not the shortest, here is the shortest, which I used to tell to my children when they begged for a second story:

Once upon a time,
they lived happily ever after,
the End.

When I was a kid and asked for a bed time story, my Russian grandfather would say, "Once upon a time there were three geese. The end."

He would then laugh and laugh. Never figured out what he found so funny about it.
