Computer Wont Turn On??
« on: April 26, 2005, 09:35:36 AM »
Hiyas All:

Quick question: My boss' computer died. First the keyboard quit resopnding (main keys, enter, cntrl, alt, del all worked). Then, although his monitir was plugged in and working, it would not acknowledge such, blinking screen on monitor said "Monitor working, check power cords". The CPU at this point would not even turn on! I figgered maybe power supply, so I swapped out my old one with his ... nothing. I cannot even get the CPU to turn on. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Nim

Could be anything hosed from memory to displaycard.

Does the machine boot up after its cooled down a little? Does the bios give error beeps on startup?

Hardware is so cheap these days that it's not cost effective to troubleshoot a desktop for more than an hour or two. After that it's better to replace the hardware and slap the old hd in.

Check the mobo for blown or bulged/crusty capacitors, a sure sign that the mobo is dead.

Remove everything that is removable including the cpu, and replace after cleaning.  Dust kills computers.

Remember to replace the thermal paste if you will remove the CPU. And wear an antistatic wristband (earthed).

This is what I would do, re-seat the cpu, memory and HDD. Is the video card onboard or PCI/AGP? If it is a card I would  check and make sure that it is correctly seated also. Try these steps first before you commit to a mobo swap. Thats what I would do.

Oh and by the way GO SOONERS !
