Aces High needs a new commercial
« Reply #45 on: April 27, 2005, 07:46:57 AM »
Okay, guess I'll wade in here with my thoughts. Does anyone remember the old commercial? It makes the new one look pretty dang good to me. I for one am very happy to see AH being advertised in the first place. I still remember the day I was home with a sick child and saw it on Discovery Wings (RIP DW), I thought it was exciting and was very pleased to see it.

AH had a big influx of players when WB's management went insane. Then another even bigger one when AW went belly up. But I do not think that both of those events combined equal the influx of fresh meat...errr...new players that these television spots bring in.

I only hope that HTC is tracking some demographics from new subscriptions with a simple "how did you hear about us?" radio button. I'll wager that the ones who came here due to the TV ads don;t tend to stay as long as the WB/AW defectors do but the influx of new players is what keeps the game alive and under constant development.

Also, I feel it must be said...I don't think it is constructive to come here and say "that commercial sucks" unless you are willing/able to make a better one yourself or pay a professional to produce one out of your pocket.

I say keep up the advertisements and consider other channels too, albeit for a more targeted programming and lower volume.

Anyone capable of putting together a film with interlaced clips ??

Doing this is very simple.

The toughest part of the whole deal is getting a scene from Aces High to look similar to the historical footage. I am speaking in terms of the enviorment itself. And even then, its not that tough.

And I agree with you Ed.

So many love to play monday morning quarterback and say how they think things should be done and how good it could have looked or should have looked. When many of them haven't even put a film together with aces high footage... And to have it come out looking somewhat decent.

Well Morpheus the only reason I started this thread was because I had seen what the filmmakers in the community are capable of.

The work I have seen on the BB got me thinking about how bad the commercial is.

Kingcat made an awesome short film, it's definitely commercial material.

"Beat!"

A competition sounds cool too. I am definitely interested.

All righty then,

I have an Idea, as I too have seen the comercial on Discovery Wings, History Channel, and now the Millitary channel.  While the current comercial works it could stand some tweaking.

I do not think it would be hard to round up enough willing participants to stage a filming of a large formation of bombers being attacked by fighters, with escourts respectively.  Now if this is done by a master cinimographer with maxed out detail and graphics it would look like an authentic peice of footage, which could be intertwined with the game footage.  Of course the voiceover would have to change along with a musical interlude.

Just my 2 cents. :aok

DaddyAck I had the same thought.

Can't you just picture 5 or 6 flights of B-17's, surrounded by the beautiful new ack burst in a sky red with the sunrise?

Bring in the 190D9's and 109's 110's diving on the buffs lobbing cannon shells at them. B-17 catches fire, another effect done very well in the current version.

Cut to a Panzer and T-34 slugging it out in the new trees. Boom there goes the T-34's turret flying through the air.

I guess the point is that it is apparent HT has put allot of effort into the game.

It is time to advertise that effort.

Default commercial doesnt seem to bad only main problem is the voice over.

Of course if you want to attract an older audience I reccomend more shots of just general formations and flight then of combat.Too much combat makes it looks arcadey,But too little and it looks boring.

We were experimenting with the idea that monster-truck-rally/pro-wrestler enthusiasts would also like WW2 flight sims. :)

Balsy...that interlaced idea....didn't MS Combat Flight Simulator do something that in the opening credits, like on a takeoff or something?  I remember watching it for the first time and thinking how cool it was.

I wish I could see the commercial....the only station I get is History Channel and if it's on there then I am not watching at the right times.

Did I direct what I said towards you? Or did you just assume that I did? You know what they say about asaumption.

Nah... It was for the ones who come out and say...

Well that sucks, this sucks, it all sucks, and it should be better... The same people who've never put an AH film together in the first place.

This idea is a good one, and it was mentioned quite a while back, before this new commercial ever came out.

Now that Pyro has shown some interest in a commercial made by a player or players the ball might get rolling and we might see some folks getting into making films for AH.

Its nothing short of a pain in the arse to use the AH film viewer and take clips and scenes, put them together and have them look like the belong together in the finished product.

I suppose I did take it a little personally, since I was the one who started this thread.

I appreciate your explanation.

The post was meant to inspire the creative people among us.

Or HT for that matter.
