Aces High Convention 2005 (UK)
« on: May 08, 2005, 06:13:24 PM »
It has fallen to me this year to organise the UK Aces High Convention. It will be held at Thruxton, near Andover, Hampshire  in October or November this year. Middle Wallop is a stone's throw away from Thruxton, which you may know was the primary airfield for the USAAF 67th Tactical Reconnaissance Group during the second world war and subsequently a British Army Air Corps base.

Our previous conventions have been extremely successful, but on this, the 60th Anniversary of Victory in Europe, we would like it to be extra special.

We are expecting two Lancaster crew members to be our guests of honour along with an enthusiast engineer who refits warbirds at his facility close by. It is hoped that by the time of the convention he will have refitted a two seater spitfire and that a lucky winner of one of our competitions will fly in the back seat. If the spit isn't ready, then the flight will be in a Harvard or a Chipmunk.

The event will start on a Friday night. On the Saturday, there will be competitions of various descriptions (online and physical, such as clay pidgeon shooting and croquet) followed by a gala dinner, at which the guests of honour will speak. On the Sunday we will go to Thruxton airfield where we will be taken through the rebuild of two hurricanes and a spitfire (if they are not already flying).

Given the anniversary timing of the event, we would especially like our friends from Europe, the Commonwealth, America and Russia to join us. If you would like to register your interest, please answer our survey

p.s. there will also be lots of drinking.

p.p.s. all profits from the convention do go to a worthy WW2 aviation veteran's charity.
