I am converting to an indexed color (256 adaptive) within Photoshop and then  using "save as" to conver the BMP. What are you currently using to get it into 256?

Are you sure that's not a 512X512 version?

Basically that happens when you don't dither. I set mine to "best" and even still once in a while it doesn't look too hot.

I'll try this bright out, but I doubt it'll look better than what I get.
