USS Buchanan refueling from a Carrier while underway. The Buchanan survived the war and performed water taxi duty in Tokyo bay, ferrying VIPs to the USS Missouri for the surrender ceremony.

I want to say some early counterpart to the NIXIE and FOXER towed decoys, but I dont know if they had stuff like that back then.

They aren't torpedos, thats for sure.

On the port rear quarter just in front of the number  484?  That is a ships "bumper" to help keep the ship off of the CV if it got too close from a swell or sloppy steering.
