Well, it's not plantar fasciitis after all...
« on: May 09, 2005, 08:17:56 AM »
After going to a second specialist, getting a second set of x-rays, having my right foot MRI'd, it looks like I don't have PF after all.  He thinks it's an inflammed plantar fascia (sp?).  I have been putting up with this for over 6 months now.  The first podiatrist told me, after 3 cortisone injections and therapy which didn't heal it, that surgery is the only option left.  Went to the second specialist and he looked at my foot for 2 hours and didn't think it was PF.  He did say, however, that he would have done the same treatment as the first but ruled out surgery for my condition as surgery wouldn't fix anything.  Don't you just love doctors?

Plantar fasciitis is inflammation of the plantar fascia.

-itis  is a word temination meaning inflammation of the part indicated by the word (it's Greek).

For example, appendicitis is inflammation of the appendix, tonsillitis is inflamamtion of the tonsils, and so on.

How much did you pay for this second opinon anyway?

Yes, but this is not of the heel variety where they go in and cut up the membrane near the heel.  This is an inflammation of the arch area.  PF is normally associated with heel pain where this is more from the front of the heel across the arch and ending just at the ball of the foot.

I didn't pay anything but a $10 co-pay.  And HE was the one that spent 2 hours with me.  The first one was "Oh yeah, that's PF alright.  We'll start you on cortisone shots and therapy, might think of getting some ortho's while your at it.  If that don't work, I will have to operate." without ever really doing a thorough inspection of my foot.

EDIT - I see your point and I understand.  The MRI's went to a specialist at UTMB in Galveston and even she (she's in her 70's, been doing this all her life) couldn't identify what would be causing my pain.  But it's not the kind that requires surgery at the heel which is most associated with the term plantar fasciitis.

Thats strange bud. Hell you aren't that large of a man and I have not seen it in anyone outside of extremely large people in my time dealing with athletic injuries in college. One thing the trainers would have the guys do is to pull a towel backwards with a 5 pound weight laying on it. They had to use their toes only to pull the weight backwards to their feet. It seemed to work for those guys since it was strengthening the muscles attached to those tendons.
