Is it a bug??
« on: May 11, 2005, 01:05:05 PM »
Is it a bug if I shoot an nmez tail off (Niki) while I'm in a P-47 D-11 from 600 feet on in, and he falls away minus his tail, and as he falls, he shoots his guns, and a countryman (in a Spit) comes in and shoots him til he explodes. My countryman gets the kill and I get the assist. Is that right according to the damage model?

Yes. The one who made the most damage gets the kill.

Not neccessarily the one who destroyed the plane.

Id say it is bad form to shoot at a plane thats alredy disabled. Some do it anyway. And sometimes you just realize to late that the falling plane is alredy missing vital parts.

This is what people refer to as 'kill stealing'.

Taking it to extremes: Someones peppers a plane all over with 303s without doing any damage (besides the holes). Another shoots the same plane with one bullet to the canopy. Still the first would get the kill.
21 is only half the truth.

Schatzi:
That's the way it used to be, and it isn't anymore. I think something is porked then. hehe, kinda tough to duplicate though so it can be looked at ;)
And I understand why my countyrman kept shooting at the guy; the victim was spraying at a passing group of Buffs w/o a chance of hitting anything. Still, it was me who shot his tail off yet, I didnt get the kill.

Please help about kill vs assist

If the system in the following quote were implemented, your scenerio would probably have turned out differetly.

But I have lost wings at times near ground and ended up with a ditch by luck.

What would be possible is that no more lethality points are tracked once certian componets fail. The plane could still be shot and more damage done, but no kill award tracking would be done, you still must stay living until the hit plane exits flight.

Been thinking about implementing this for a while, it just hasn't moved to the top of the list yet.

Yeah I read that a while ago, and as you hi-lited the words cannon, I tend to agree; if you got cannon, your chances of getting the kill are increased. The funny thing is, I read these books and accounts of RL ww2 fights, and the fifty caliber gun package were some of the most lethal gunsets during the war; even used throughout the Korean war on jets....go figger.

Quite true, US 50 cals are extreamly lethal. Unfortunatly it's not about lethality as much as physical (or should we say virtual) damages to the plane. Exploding virtual cannon shells inflict more damage because the coad has to account for the explosion.

Case in Point: If I put 4 cannon shells into the fuselage of an F6F (one very tough bird) then you come along and saw his wing with your 50 cals, The F6F is tumbling to the ground because you sawed off his wing yet I will most likely get the kill.

Is it fair? No. Is it just the way it is? Yeah. Does it justify "kill stealing"?, not in the slightest.
