Pilsner Beer
« on: May 16, 2005, 06:31:11 PM »
This is my favorite type of beer.  The problem is that the real stuff (like Pilsner Urquell) is generally in glass bottles and has turned into skunk city by the time it gets to Amreeka.  If you can get it in a keg it's OK, but any bottles that allow light will get the photo-skunk thing going on.

Which leaves domestic pilsners.  Not assy corn and rice crap like Bud, but actual pilsners made from beer ingredients.

So I'm looking for good domestic pilsners.
Right now my favorite is Sierra Nevada's Summerfest but any suggestions are welcome.

I don't think it skunks while in transit. It skunks while sitting around waiting to get from the warehouse to the store and from the store until you buy it.

There's a small store in Jax Beach that keeps the Pilsner Urquell out of the light and its rare I get a skunky one. But then again I am on the east coast.

Best solution would be to move closer to the Czech Republic. You will find some good Pilsner there. Euro-tard land can't be much worse then Aztlan.

Funked, no, or very few, beers are shipped across national borders in bottles or cans.  They are shipped in tanks, and bottled locally.  Heiniken was an exception, back in the day, but I do not know about now.

Don't seem to have a problem getting non-skunked Urquell down here, and we are a lot further from Pilzen than you are. Perhaps Budweiser and Miller are paying the curtoms folks to hold for an extra month? :)

Ahh yes....skunky beer.  An unfortunate process that occurs when beer bottled in clear bottles gets exposed to light.  This is the reason I refuse to buy any beer that is imported and sold in the US in clear bottles.  Its so much better to find the same beer somewhere in a keg or even better...cask conditioned.  MMMMMMmmmmm.

Check out BJs out there in Kalifornia Funkypants.  They make a pretty good Pilsner that most of the restaurants have on tap.  There is a brewery here in TX called Live Oak that makes a good Pilz as well.  I usually stick to the stouts and porters or the ESBs so I dont know much about any nationally distributed Pilsners that you might be able to find out there.  Does Alaska brewery make a Pilsner?  I know the rest of their stuff is excellent so if they did make a Pils it would probably be pretty good.

Thanks guys.  Email OTW.  :D
I'm very pleased with the Sierra but variety is good.  :)

PS
Oakland Coliseum (of recent infamy) serves Pilsner Urqell now.  First level, just towards home plate from Gate D.
