Dynamic Soaring!

Just a blatant plug for my good friend Dave Reese and the sport of dynamic soaring. Check out this mind boggling run, and remember, these are unpowered R/C gliders!

Check out some of the other video clips.

Joe Wurts explains it very well in the full video.

Essentially you're using the shear layers and wind speed differential behind an obstacle to accelerate. Theoretical speeds are 400mph+! Of course the planes are already hitting 30+ g's and the planes construction defines it's max speed. All the new records typically culminate in the planes violent mid-air de-construction.

google for dynamic soaring for lots more crazy videos and better explanations!

It is absolutely not microlift. BTW I fly paragliders too!

For DS you have to pull very hard corners to turn around before you lose much energy. Here's a diagram.

From this very descriptive page:

I've toasted quite a few nice composite sailplanes doing it, but damn is it fun.

Hey Nuke, you want me to see if I can get you a ride with my brother?  He's a glider pilot there.  Let me know bro.

Hhehehehe.. stuns folks to learn that the speed record in R/C is held by an unpowered sailplane and not a jet turbine.

Sloping and Dynamic Speed runs are a freakin huge rush! Anal retentive owners of hanger queens need not attempt.  Saw a guy get hugely bent outta shape when his bird shredded (RnR Genesis) when it hit the rotor... someone told him to take up model trains or stamp collecting if a busted bird causes THAT much anguish.

I laughed all the way down the hill.

Hell yes! If it's no burdon to anyone, I'd love to go up in one of those.....I have never been in a glider.
