Shot 10 rds. through my nagant.
« on: May 20, 2005, 05:17:44 PM »
I shot just 10 rds today at a rifle range at a distance of 25 yards..

I checked the first five rounds through binocs to insure that I was hitting the target, 3-5 were inside the black area..

My mom shot 5 rds through it..

Then it started to rain like hell.. and we decided to leave..

40 rounds of Czech Silver Ball 7.62x54 rounds= $10.00

Day trip to a range with a 15min video and 20 question test= $18.00

Watching my mom forget to move the bolt to chamber a round, put 3 outa 5 rounds into the black ,and have the gun kick up on her= Priceless.

Yes sir..

91/30

Created in 1891 to fire a paper cartridge using a sharp needle to penetrate and ignite the powder.

Revised in 1930 to use brass, and frequently jams and is one of the few bolt action rifles that I know of that dosn't like blanks and live rounds.

I own currently 4 M/N rifles. 2 91/30s, 1 M38, and 1 M44. I have never had a jam that I can remember.  I shoot all types of milsurp ammo. The only problem I can think of is the Czech silvertip is sometimes hard to extract from my M44.  These things are so simple and rugged, great design for the time IMHO. Still I like my Mausers better tho :aok

It's not a "nagant". It's a Mosin. Nagant's rifle lost a competition to Mosin's design.

Russian army adopted rifles for central-fire unitary cartridges in late 1860s. I don't know any mass-produced Russian needle rifles. Krnk's rifle (a muzzle-loaded rifle conversion) and Berdans were made for brass cartridge, caliber 4.5 lines. (11.43mm)

You have some strange version of a 3-line rifle.

Original Mosins were designed for ball-tipped bullets. In 1908 a new cartridge was adopted, with ogival bullet. In 1930 a new cartridge with "heavy" longer ogival bullet.

Rifles made after 1908 can fire any type of cartridge. Non-converted rifles made before 1908 can use only ball-tipped cartridges, newer ogival bullets could indeed jam.

1930 modernisation had some minor technological changes, and was a unified dragoon rifle instead of infantry, dragoon and cossack versions. There also was some change in a bayonet attachment IIRC.

Calling 3-line rifle "unreliable" is something new to me. Did you try to clean it?

Cool post and story Hawk, Bore-us-da is trying to be King Russian master of all things Soviet, but that has nothing to do with your enjoyment of running a few rounds through your Russian rifle. Good stuff, good post.

I picked up 2 M38's, a 1940, and a 44 yesterday, and can't wait to fire a few rounds. The weather has broke here, so I'll get to check them out, finally. I also have a M44, and 2 other rifles the expert will claim to  fame be calling Nagants. Super Duper.

Just enjoy.

I love my Mosin Nagant..

If I had to take a bolt action rifle into action it would be it..

It is superior, accurate, reliable, and rugid..

I've heard other people complain of live ammo jamming, I havn't had that problem yet..

I've had a few blank rounds jam, but thats because they don't have a round in them to guide them into the barrel..

Drop a grain of sand onto a Mauser and it will lock up..

Drop a pile of sand onto a Mosin Nagant and it will continue to work, may end up breaking your wrist working the bolt but it still works. :)

I under stand Boroda, but It's easier for us English people to say Nagant then Mosin..

I know there is deeper history behind the Nagant, and I understand perhaps I should of used google like you, but please don't be such a smart ass..

Considering the price of a Mauser and a Nagant, the difference is irrasputiable, (SP?), Nagants are superior..

Sorry, here "nagant" is a name of a 1895  revolver, or sometimes even any revolver. That's why it really disturbing to hear someone calling "tryokhlineyka" (3-liner) a "nagant"... It was a main reason for my rant ;)

BTW, from what I have read in Soviet books - Nagant's rifle lost a competition mostly because it didn't pass a sand and salt-water test compared to Mosin's rifle.

Later I have read somewhere that the final rifle is a Mosin's bolt with Nagant's magazine. Mosin also was the one who invented a cutter-deflector.

From what I've heard it was Mosins brother.. Nagant who invented the revolver.. correct?

Which is one of the few revolvers that can be silenced due to the chamber moving up to the breech..

Mosin was a chief engineer of Sestroretsk firearms factory. Mauser were brothers ;) Nagant was a Belgian engineer.

Yes, and it's why it's so difficult to load, you have to extract and load cartridges one by one.

Here is an article in English: http://world.guns.ru/rifle/rfl03-e.htm It has some mistakes, for example Cossack version was different not only because it didn't have a bayonet (cossacks had lances), but it also didn't have a guard around a trigger.

I have 2 M44s, and an M38.  One 44 and the 38 have been converted to a more "modern" style with synthetic "monte carlo" style stocks, and the 38 has been "kit" converted to a WWII style sniper setup (the teeny little scope, the reworked bolt).  The 44 I was going to fit for a normal scope, but havent gotten around to it yet.  The other M44 is in original condition, with the cleaning rod, a belt "clip" pouch, a handful of the metal "clips" (I have no idea what they are called) that hold the bullets together for quick loading into the clip area, and the bayonet (I removed the bayonet from the other "modernized" one).

I did have problems with some of the military surplus ammo I found at the gun shows, but only in that it was not as accurate as I would have liked, and very "dirty".  Winchester makes some very affordable modern hunting rounds in 7.62x54 that are (I believe) Noslers.  I took a deer at around 75-80 yards with the M44 and the plain iron sights, very accurate.

The only suggestion I have if you decide to go with one of the synthetic stocks, they arent perfect fits.  You have to do a bit of sanding here and there to get the barrel to seat right.  Otherwise, all the guns are shooters, all work flawlessly, and all were very inexpensive.

A russian rifle being.....unreliable.  thats new, every russian gun we have owned has never jammed, the AK stove piped after every hundred or so rounds, but that was crappy ammo, the "nagant" never jams, and the SKS is about like the AK, but we have to clean it more.:aok
