I've made a few french jokes... but after thinking about it, decided to stop. Of all the nations in Europe, France has been the most consistent ally. They poured water on the seeds of our liberty in the 1700s, shined the light that helped it grow in the 1800s, and have been through tremendously difficult times during the last century. In the mid 1940s, we had an opportunity to return the favor by helping free them of their nazi bonds, but you don't end a friendship the moment you 'even the books'.
I might disagree with some of their loud mouth politicians, but we have the same people over here. I'm embarrassed when I see international attention being given to some people in the US, and I'm certain that I have a counterpart in France who feels the same way about some of his louder countrymen.
I'm not sure that I like everything about France today, but I feel that the history of yesterday's France makes it more then worth giving them the benefit of the doubt until the pendulum swings back.
