Hun Buster XVI?
« on: June 01, 2005, 02:04:54 PM »
Hi Guys,

Saw a P-47D-40 at the Pope Airforce Base Airshow this past Saturday called "Hun Buster XVI" - I'd never heard of it before. Anyone got any history on this bird?

- SEAGOON

PS: Also saw Panchito, Liberty Belle, and Crazy Horse.

Think you saw Hun Hunter XVI. Painted up as a 57th FG P47.  Better known version of that bird was Hun Hunter XIV that was a razorback NMF Jug from the same group.

Doh! Thanks Guppy, that's it... Got the name wrong.

Very pretty a/c. I was amazed to see the build date on this one was 1953. Had no idea Republic kept building them post-WW2.

The Taiwanese AF was using F-47s around that time against Chinese MiGs.
Never have read anywhere about how they did...I think they were in USAF usage as training A/C also

The Republic F-47 Thunderbolt is likely been used by US Air National Guard, but they were replace quickly by F-51 Mustang and F-80 Shooting Star before Korean War.
