Well apparently my Epox 8rda+ after 2 1/2 years of service finally gave up the ghost.

So...

I come here to seek the guidance of the Aces High geek elite so they could steer me towards an Athlon 64 system that takes an AGP card, has the ability to upgrade in the future to faster 64s, and has the ability to connect at least 3 IDE devices. oh and the RAM to be at least PC3200 and the mobo be dual channel capable.

the price range is about 500-400 bucks

just the mobo/cpu and ram .

Any suggestions are welcome and thanks

512mb PC2700 ram x2 256 sticks
ATI 9500 pro

For 400-500
You should be able to pick up an AMD64 3500, Asus A8V (AGP slot) and some decent memory (2x512mb).

Just make sure that whatever Athlon 64 setup you buy, that it's socket 939, not 754 or 940. 939's are dual channel capable, 940 and 754 are not.

Actually socket 940 is dual channel its just that that is for Opterons.

i figured by the time duel core becomes a reality it will be time for an upgrade anyways

What asus model of the A8V would be the one you suggest since I know there was one in the past couple of months that was posted that was both SATA and IDE capable and had the 939 slot, do you have a link for Newegg or Mwave that I could use.

Another quesiton that I have in regards to this mobo is it power hungry like my old Epox board and will I spend at least a week causing internal bleeding to my brain trying to set it up like ye olde Epox

Thanks eagler but I have a question what's the difference between a Venice and Winchester chip,except one costs 3 bucks more.

Forgot to mention one thing I would need a cpu heatsink fan for it too though since my 2400xp fan/sink wouldn't work for it, right ?

Venice is the latest one with SSE3 instructions.
Also supports a full 4 banks of DDR400 at DDR400 speed not DDR333.
