, there are many ways of playing 4-4-2. The most commonly used is when you want to focuse on supporting your deffence first. If the plan was offence, you would use a more offencive formation wouldn't you?

it's called a 4-3 or a 3-4 defense, each with 2 safties and 2 cornerbacks in standard package.

nickle replaces a safety with a corner, dime replaces 2 linebackers with safties
